Hello everyone im getting my VW Crafter van chipped tommorrow. Its being done by WOW TUNING IN Ruislip, anyone had any dealings with them? The chap there sounded very knowledgeable, its a 109 bhp at the moment, should go up to 135 bhp. Im doin it because ive heard there can be a positive fuel saving, i hope so with the amount of miles i do.

Good call, Im going to get my Caddy mapped when I get the time! 104 up too 145/150bhp.

Some engines are extremely tuneable from a remap you know...

My ibiza Fr is a 150 standard.

A remap took it to 215, petrol turbo not diesel.

I call bullst on this one redcard

Op - I don't mean to sound arrogant, but it's easy to get 'sucked' into the HUGE power and torque figures. These figures are often figures of the imagination wink I hope you're pleased with the remap, and I don't blame you for loving the idea of 105bhp-->150bhp, it's exactly that which got me interested in tuning and what can and cannot be done.

Don't go for the cheapest and the biggest gains etc etc (even though that is unfortunately what the UK market always slides towards) go for quality, every single time.

The problem I have with the whole chipping situation is, it can make fairly average cars quite a lot quicker than intended; yet owners rarely improve the brakes.

For me, going faster is useless if I'm not backed up by decent stopping material. So people putting 160bhp into a hatchback intended for 100bhp makes me nervous, because the pram-wheels those cars are sold with aren't intended for the power now delivered.

Just got home, well happy with results. It has so much more torque, didnt have to drop down a single gear on the motorway. The power has been increased by 30 bhp approx. il tank it up tomorrow and do a mpg test. ive got a flyer with all the company details if anyone wants to know. This is my van:

This is the exact problem. I'm lead to believe that Dyno Dynamic rollers are silly optimistic or the figures can be 'adjusted' very simply.

This isn't to say that any rolling road is perfect, that would be stupid but as is life, there's going to be some great products, average products and crap products. I unfortunately don't have ANYWHERE near the knowledge to read, understand and then explain why some rollers are better than others!

That one I can help with, partially. Overfuelling a diesel often results in soot and black smoke out of the exhaust.

Manufacturers need to consider emissions.

This may be rubbish, but I seem to recall being told that this was a side effect of the massively long (5 / 7 year) warranties and the increased service intervals (my old passat had service intervals of up to something stupid like 27,000 miles, well in theory but the service indicator came on around 20,000). By restricting the power, so the theory went, the engines would be less stressed therefore last longer?

That spec of 1.8T remaps to 180/185bhp max. It's the 180bhp spec with its bigger turbo and intercooler that get you 205/210bhp with a map...

At least part of the reason why engines run a low-power map is to allow them to run on poor quality petrol in case they are driven in countries where they only have low RON fuel.

Open question to the OP and anyone else whos had a re-map/chip.

How much did your insurance go up by? (If at all)

...because it's a modification, and as such you could easily have your insurance refused if you have an accident and they find out?
