Bolt on Silencers

Had the ACT extra silencers on at the weekend. The prospect of up to 6 hours with my exhaust was too much.

Have to say they really quietened it down. Possibly below the original levels before I had the straight through pipes. I'm going to try and get it fully noise tested next weekend as I'm at the GF's parents near the Bedford Autodrome. If I do I'll post some results on here.

So, early conclusions are that I should be able to get back on track. Before anyone asks, they were £45 plus VAT. Got them from Austec but I'm sure the ACT website will sort you out.

How do they affix to the pipes. Do you have to drill, then screw them in place, or are they held on by ‘U’ shaped exhaust brackets which you just tighten around the slip on and exhaust. I assume you have to do them up ‘f’ tight as at high revs that’s a lot of pressure trying to blow them off. I don’t fancy being on track, and shooting a bolt on silencer through someone’s windscreen.

I tested some on a rolling road without even fitting clamps, they stayed on but i was ready to catch them though , they use "U" clamps so no chance of falling off, back pressure isn't that great.

I've seen somebody try using similar tail boxes which are designed to be held on by clamps, but being lazy and not having the right clamps to hand they just relied on the cans being a very tight fit on the pipe. Bad move, the combination of heat and vibration had them off in a couple of laps, potentially very nsaty although this time they got lucky. I've never seen them fall off if properly fitted though.

Oh i should have added that the clamps should be "done up" tight, it is also important the any silencer should be a snug fit and over sleeve by about 3"

Had them on for about 5 hours. By the time we got home 2 of the nuts had loosened a little so were just under finger tight. I think I'll be checking them more frequently next time I put the tails on.

Has anyone actually noise tested these yet?
