Following on from this article linky - does anyone here ride with a camera on their helmet? If so, what camera do you use and has it ever been useful or is it completely a case of defensive riding, everyone else on the road is a muppet?

Have to agree with this - he was shouting when he could see full well what the van driver was going to do and could have saved himself a lot of hassle by sticking his brakes on and just letting the idiot of a van driver get on with it. Although pleased to see the van driver got 5 points or something for his trouble It is difficult to tell how hard the cyclist had to brake to avoid the collision as well, either way the van drivers reaction was well over the top.

Less than £20 - I might get one for my helmet, one for the handlebars and one for backwards at that price Let me know if they're any good Allow me to save you the trouble. I have one that I use on my lid for my daily commute. Good job.

It's now much steadier as I've reposition it, velcroed it and held it on with a single cable tie. It records in a loop by the way.

A great website for these tiny cams is http://www.chucklohr.com/808/ A lot of it might be irrelevant, but I'm sure some will be useful. I have 2 of the keyring cams and they are ok to play with, not in the least bit waterproof though!

So it records 3 hours worth of video but saves it in 5 minute chunks? When you download it on your computer do you just get lots of 5 minute segment files then?
What is the battery life? "5-6 Stand by" wouldn't equal much recording time? does anyone know if there any others on the market with slightly better resolution doesn't need to be 1080p but 720 video would be good, equally as cheap, ok I could stretch to sub £50.

Hi,
Sorry for the delay. This pic is from the initial fitting. I now have it mounted to be a slightly higher angle (So further back), with a single cable tie around the front of it and through the vents. The rear is kept from shimmying about by two bits of 3M self-adhesive industrial strength velcro on the helmet, and the hook bit stuck to the camera. It stops vibration nicely.
Helmet is in full commuter winter mode. Camera will actually record for about 3-4hours on battery according to my friend who left his switched on to see. I only use mine for my commute and some fooling around on cars etc, so I've never actually ran the battery flat.
It comes with a 12V charger and can charge and record at the same time, so for incar use it's perfect. It's not waterproof, so don't expect it to be fantastic.
Actual footage is better than the Youtube clip shows, Youtube downsamples it. With the steadier mounting on my helmet, it's now better...although I still look down alot. See this clip for the updated version:

Go for the one with the card included as if you get a cheapo card from eBay, it might be a lesser spec and some people have said they get slow patches in the video with the cheaper cards.
And yep, this is all from a sub £20 camera. I think they're fantastic. They're not Sony standard by any means, and you may need to send the first one back like I did, but for the money they're great for our use. I run a Caterham hire business, and I wanted cheap cameras to mount to the car for fun footage, but that I wouldn't cry if it fell off in the process. I think that just sums them up. If you want a super camera to get great video and you'll look after it, this is not for you. If you want something to play around with, strap to different bits of your bike or use as a commuter camera...this is ideal.

I too have the same camera as pictured above. I previously used a more upright design of sub-£15 camera (a copy of the Muvi Micro DV) but the battery died. So I ordered that one. Embarrassingly I thought mine was f**ked as it kept stopping, then restarting at 5-minute intervals. I didn't realise it was supposed to do that, perhaps I should RTFM sometimes
Anyway, quality on these is "OK" but not great in low light due to the small sensor I guess. But they're great being so small and inobtrusive. Incidentally, I used mine for filming on my MTB too and they're OK for that, but I'm not considering a basic Go Pro Hero camera for around £100 for MTBing (quality is a step above).

(the jist is that I recorded the incident, reported it to the police who didn't do anything and didn't even want to view my video as they claimed it couldn't be used as evidence, apparently).
