Why is there always 2 photo challenges per month?

One is the monthly challenge which is for photos taken after the start date, the other is open to images you've taken previously. The idea is that for the Challenge you get out and about rather than using your collection.

I think there should just be one challenge. the one where you have to take the photo during that month. the other challenge is a bit pointless really. IMO

There is only one challenge, the other is the monthly competition and has always been open to any image in your library. The challenge was only started up last year (as opposed to 5 or 6 years for the competition) and was designed to get people out and shooting for that particular month.
