Hi,

I have a car itch that needs scratching, or at least will do by the summer... Do I:

1) Keep my 2.0ltr 2005 STi, get it remapped, fit coilovers (shocks are knocking) and fit ARB's etc.
2) Chop the car in for a newer 2.5ltr STi (MY07 ideally - but I will have no cash for mods).

Thougts... BTW, this is not intended to start a 'which is better thread', but may well result in that wink

Of course, an Evo is an outsider too... But I would miss that exhaust note...

I think the 07 is a hawk eye. If so try driving one to see if you like it. The 2.5 is very smooth in its power delivery (compared to the 2.0lt anyway). I prefer the wizz bang of the 2.0lt

Not the hatch... vomit

I love the frantic feel of my car, and when I drove the 2.5 I did not get that. However, I did not take it for a proper drive and get a feel for any other benefits of the 2.5ltr. If it helps, its a pure weekend weapon, and does not go on the motorway much anymore.

I went from a 2ltr MY05 STI, to a 2.5ltr GB270 hawkeye, last year. The hawkeye costs double the amount to tax. I prefer the headlights on the hawkeye, and the torque spread makes it much nicer driving around town. If I were you I'd probably stick with the blob eye, then mod it.

I know its a WRX vs. STI comparison, but how do they compare when driving hard (high revs etc)... I guess my main concern is do you lose any top end lunacy ...

The GB270 is pretty much an STI but with a 5 speed box, and no DCCD. I really haven't noticed any difference in acceleration, I think the STI edged it on top end, due to having a better gearbox. I do miss the DCCD however. The suspension on the 270 is way better than the stock STI, as is the handling.
It's six of one and half a dozen of the
other really. I prefer the look of the 270 as well.

The hawkeye is better looking... However, I guess if I can bring it on par with some suspension mods and sort the mid range out with a remap (I miss the lower down torque from my 2005 WRX PPP) then its probably not worth upgrading... From a longevity PoV its not like owning a car just 2 years newer makes a big difference...

Thanks

Choice made – I am going to stick with the 2005 and get it remapped etc.. Changed my policy today to cover mods etc (Keith Michaels – fantastic).

You've got the best of the newage 2ltr UK cars and DCCD to boot!! There is so much scope for simple mods and tuning (80+bhp and 100ftlb) with just a decat exhaust, flat panel air filter and remap.

Leave the standard exhaust headers and uppipe as they are, fit a decat turbo back system sticking with the OEM manufacturer pipe bore size of 2.5/8", decent flat panel air filter (K&N, Green Panel etc...), Snorkus delete, and an Open Source remap to keep costs in check.

Perfect choice sir!! thumbup

I'd be going this way for a Subaru 'weekend car' - but Subarus are practically all sensible everyday cars (fuel consumption aside in some cases), why not go for something genuinely silly for a weekend toy? hehe

In which case stick with what you've got. The Subaru is a pretty good place to keep your little ones nice and safe regardless of road conditions, and it won't break down when you least need it to. In all my years of ownership i've yet to see any Suabru broken down on the motorway or side of an A or B road, or on the back of a breakdown truck, or stuck in the snow.

IMHO they're pretty damn reliable, and even if you mod it to reasonable power levels your granny will still be able to drive it gently to the shops. She might not let you have it back though. hehe

You know that you can fix the suspension knock by stripping the shock and replacing the grease inside. All that happens is that it goes waxy/hard on some of the 2004/5 year cars.

Do a seach on some of the US sites, you will find pictures.

Don't rush into coilovers. I had the full T25 kit on my car and although it was great to drive, I was avoiding all the known bumps in the road (which are much worse now, since the snow damage).

Ahh so you still need the space, fair enough then thumbup Would be an Impreza over an Evo for me anyway!

Just thought I'd mention it as I considered an STi-RA as a combination sensible/toy car and ended up with a Legacy GTB(sensible car) and an MX5(toy), with a combined value lower than the STi but covering a much wider range of talents. Then I got carried away and sold the MX5 for a 255rwhp turbo MX5, which is starting to get into 'silly car' territory. smile
