M5 killed by oh!
Discussion
Girlfriend has just driven the car into back of another car in traffic! Impact was about 25mph I'm guessing and other parties have already sorted their whiplash claims (not that they let their basic English skills put them off) car has bonnet, wing and bumper damage and is a 99 m5. I'm guessing it may be a total loss?
Also remember that for most policies it is not a case of the works costing more than worth of car to determine write off. If the insurer reckons they can minimise their cost by making a payout to you and selling on to salvage rather than funding cost of repairs then that's what they will do, even though repairs may be a lot less than value of car.
Sorry to hear that. Having been in a similar situation a couple of yrs ago with an M3 I would advise keeping options open yet and fully researching costs. I took mine to main dealer and got a detailed quote of parts and costs (came out to around 7800 pounds
if I remember correctly), the damage wasn't horrific, it was just panels! engine etc were all fine, I think the air filter box broke so that also needed changing along with passenger wheel,
I sourced nearly all the parts myself and got an independent bodywork specialist to do the work for 1600 cash, parts cost around 2200
- so you can see the difference,
Its worth checking this, all depends on how much damage, it is drivable?, wheels turning? engine ok? any chassis split? door alignment?
also check current car prices, what insurance are offering, if anyone would buy the car for parts etc, etc, these things are always a hassle but what can you do, all i can say is good luck and keep us informed,

Girlfriend driving M5!!!
Really sorry to hear that. Can you not get the insurance to fit the other parties car and you fix yours? You might be able to source some parts cheaper than main dealer?
What's the point of that ? Claim is lodged and insurance is going to jump anyway. Now you're out of pocket twice.

Sorry, I didn't realise that's what happened. I just thought perhaps it would be a way of cutting his costs whilst saving the car.
He could still buy it off the insurance company after it was written off (if they will allow it) and repair it himself, using the insurance payout. But it will be marked Cat C/D.
When car was collected yesterday by recovery garage (without a doubt the most charmless man i've ever spoken to) he assured me "no way thats going back on road mate".
Im assuming parts required will be 2 x wings (if not possible to be straightened as only tips are slightly damaged) 1 x Bonnet. 1 x Bumper.
Apart from labour and painting it doesnt need much.
Still starts and drives fine apart from airbag light now on also despite airbags not firing due to relative low speed.
Dont know if i want the car back or not really especially if it will be a cat d and therefore worth far less on sale?
Was just getting used to its quirks and qualities too.

if the car is repaired by the insurance company then it will not be recorded.Im assuming parts required will be 2 x wings (if not possible to be straightened as only tips are slightly damaged) 1 x Bonnet. 1 x Bumper.

Just been to bookshop and bill is 4300! Plus vat! Made up of 2900 parts 680 labour and 580 paint and a few extras so on the face of it I'm stuffed. Also did a online valuation for car thru glasses and they reckon for the car with 68k full main dealer history its worth 2800 upwards! ! Please tell me this is a joke! I could have bought f-ING 3 for the price I paid... find me a genuine low miles for that and I will stand hanging!

That book price is a load of tosh anyway.Bottom end of the M5 market is £5k - £7k.
A good M5 will set you back £10+ IMO!
Just look on Pistonheads.
well done! based on the repair figures that you were quoted it doesn't seem like there was much damage at all - sounds silly I know but the list price for any M power car part (be it even just a panel) is so much more than normal 3 and 5 series costs so 4kish for parts actually implies limited damage as does the relatively small labour cost.
It will affect premium of course and value of car but in general this is a very good result and based on what info you have given it should have always been the case that the M5 was repaired. Lesson to everyone including myself is to research fully whenever work/parts needed for cars to avoid being screwed over esp by main stealers and insurance companies,

I have protected no claims so hopefully won't alter premium too badly. Am led to believe that as the car is being properly repaired via an authorised dealer at insurance request it won't go down on the register?
Another poster mentioned this aswell. I was not aware this is the case, but it seems if an insurance company are willing to repair then there is no 'salvage classification category' applicable. If they were not, then you get e.g. cat D when cost of repair is assessed at between 60% to 100& relative to value of car, if over 100% then I assume this would be cat C, etc Edited by 1974nc on Saturday 5th February 05:12
But then if a car has been repaired by insurance company, and you are looking to buy then how will you know 'officially' if there has been a previous accident, will it come up on the HPI checks etc???
PS I am definitely going to take out some no claims bonus protection this w/end, I have five yrs and I'm thinking it would be stupid not to, esp with performance cars just in case,
