I have a Golf GTI Mk II as my daily shed and it's slowly falling to bits in a very un-Germanic way.

I recently saw a thread I can no longer find about a guy who bought anice red XJ 3.2 cheap as i wanted to find out how it went.

I am being tempted by a 102k 1998 XJ 3.2 auto for £1095 which initially I thought would be a dog but in the pics looks clean and the interior looks very clean indeed. Given fuel prices, i think that price could be negotiable.

I'm going to have to flog the Golf first but are these good cars? It won't be used that often though if it proves a gem, it could possibilty replace the 09 Mondeo as family transport allowing funds to be put elsewhere but I digress....

What sort of mpg do these return in commuting mode (10 miles or so).
What is the VEL
Are there particular issues on the 98s.

I would particularly like the views of anyone actually running one of these older cars.
Many thanks.

Expect up to 30mpg on a run, 20mpg for a mix of town and A/B road use sounds the norm.

Lots of these are rusty now, but the mechanicals are very strong and generally very durable.

Expensive items include noisy rear diffs, and thats about it!

Get it bought! smile

As it's the V8,I would be looking at the engine, mainly the timing chain tensioners. You need to see if these have been done, you can usually hear a rattle on starting the car anyway, but i would be asking if it had the later ones fitted. The early V8 had the dreaded nikasil problems, but at 102k if it runs well enough you should be ok. The other place of concern is the gearbox, these are sealed, but the fluid can deteriorate causing premature wear. I know it's only a grand, but these things can become very expensive to sort. Having said that, a friend of mine has a 2000 model and has had no problems with it so far. Lovely cars!

You may get 30 MPG if you drive it at 55 on motorways. Mine is fantastic!Be careful of service history, cam chain tensioners etc. There is lots of info on Nicasil bores and plastic cam chain tensioners! Expect 20 around town and 22 - 26 on a run.

Bag of sand !! Not much to worry about. Tensioners would cost you more than that if they went. To buy and run you should just check the basics, will it pass an MOT. If anything big goes it will be off to the scrap heap and/or sold for parts. In parts terms it should easily be worth more than £1K so buy run and dispose smile

At a grand that'd be my thinking too - cars only turn into money pits if you let them. Providing it's got good tyres and an mot and looks nice what's not to like?

Run it for a bit and if it's really a good 'un spend a bit on having all the fluids changed and a big tin of Waxoil.

I will not deny even I am thinking about an XJ, but I still have the old man tag on it in my head (then again I am getting old)...... But they are such good buys and if I got an old 308 XJR for a couple of grand I reckon you could get the money back if you chose to break it, but even these land barges are not faring too badly against the metal moth.

Very tempting

People who appreciate comfort and style while still young are simply ahead of their time smile

It's fine in the snow; the staff go ahead of me with shovels. Mind you I hear that if one has no staff it can be more tricky.

Can one use partridge beaters since they're loafing around in an unruly manner on the village green?

A capital idea. 'Tis but a small step from beating to shovelling, and they will be grateful for the employment.

I've had mine for a few months now (it's an X300 rather than an X308 though), had no problems with it at all. It was fine over winter, and the economy is pretty much the same as my previous Alfa V6 (although given the Alfa drank like Oliver Reed there's perhaps quite a lot of "man logic" in that comparison hehe ).

I deliberately got a straight-6 one rather than the newer V8, but you can't really go far wrong for a grand!

Another get it bought here! I bought a X300 in november for £1000 with 11 months mot and 7 months tax and I havent regretted it for a second. Getting around 18 mpg round town (I blame the roundabouts in M.K) but they are so comfortable and all my mates now want one afterthe initial grandad jokes.

This gets the award for the first thing to make me laugh out loud today, excellent.

I am after an X300 to waft about in, love Jags, just trying to convince the wife. Still it is easier to get forgiveness than permission.
