Twisted Logic: The 'Backwards' Car

Meet the Obmal, the Mazda 5-XM, the Nissan RTG and friends...

It's one that's going to make your brain hurt, this.

The folks at US car blog site Autoblog, for reasons best known to themselves, recently posted this photo of a backwards Nissan GTR on their Facebook page, with the glasshouse flipped around via the magic of Photoshop.

The resulting mutated madness was then picked up by the guys on the Final Gear forum, and those with plenty of time on their hands and too much imagination for their own good have created some occasionally wonderful and often genuinely mind-hurting virtual machines.

We often don't know whether we're coming or going here on PH, and some of these pictures really don't help - one or two of the office staff even had to go off for a quiet lie down in a darkened room after looking at them for too long - but it's pretty intriguing stuff.

We've posted the highlights here, but now is surely the time for the collective genius of PH to get on the case and join in with the latest internet craze - so get 'shopping, chaps and chapesses, and show us what you've got...

Didn't Mythbusters just rotate the body of the car on the chasis to prove it wasn't aerodynamically better?

Wasn't it the Austin Maxi that was far better aerodynamically going the wrong way? Remember playing around with models in the wind tunnel at uni and getting nice smooth airflow with the model pointing backwards, but huge draggy turbulence the right way round.

Could have been the Allegro, particularly the Vanden Plas version.

I believe that's true of most hatchbacks, they are (very approximately) the reverse of the ideal tear-drop shape.

That GTR is excellent. It looks better than the original. Actually paint it pink and you have FAB1.

Don't think the MP4-25 would work that well going backwards....would like to see someone try!

I think the Volvo looks how people drove it, tank-like!
