How loud is 102db
Discussion
Driveby is tricky as it depends a lot on siting and range of the meter but 102 is pretty generous, a lot of 105 static venues are well below 100 for driveby. The porker will probably be better on driveby than static as static tends to pick up the mechanical engine noise.
Where is the trackday?
Where is the trackday?
Beware , unusually , i think , turbos are as noisy at drive by as static if driven hard ................sure someone with Cargraphic exhaust will be by whose had the experience .........FWIW with a Cargraphic on a 993 GT2 i was often 107 db............only got warned at Goodwood and Castle Combe......thrown out at Doni ..
couple of things that will help , firstly what track is it ?? and find out where on the track they take the drive by test and back off when you pass it.
Some tracks are more strict than others .
Don't bother buying a cr*py sound tester from Maplin they are rubbish .
If you live near the track in question or if its not too far away pop down and get it tested static as you'll not be louder on a drive by .

Think the difference is down to induction noise - a lot of the scooby/evo boys have difficulty with this on heavily modified systems - if the OP hasn't done much to the induction side then this shouldn't add anything as the turbo doesn't have a huge amount of induction noise as standard. 102db drive by is fairly standard for a 105db static day and a car really has to be quite loud to trip that on drive-by....and any Porsche which passes the static 105 will easily pass a 102 drive-by due to the rear-engine penalising porsche on a static test....especially a turbo where you're not necessarily upshifting at particularly high revs.
My advice - do your own static test, the meters are cheap to buy - if you're under about 106db static then you won't have a problem. For reference a standard turbo is well under 98db static, 105db is almost uncomfortably loud to stand that close to during the test.
I have a little bike engined kitcar which is stupidly loud on driveby - I have to wear earplugs when driving as its screaming at >10000rpm continually and the exhaust is even pointing towards the meters....and I still pass driveby without problems....so unless the car is uncomfortably loud you should be ok.
What circuit is it? Maybe someone can let you know where the meters are set up and you can just short shift past to be sure.

Static does pick up mechanical noise, but drive-by tests also pick up road noise, far more induction noise (relevant for for front engined cars really) and with turbocharged cars; you will achieve a far greater exhaust note when the car is on-boost...Where is the trackday?
Just thought I would update this if anybody happened to stumble across it.
It was my 996 Turbo in question. Static was under 100 but drive by was recorded at over 105dB several times. I was tripping the meter just after the final bend coming onto the pit straight whilst flat out in third. Stewards had a word and told me to short shift at this point. It was not so much the exhaust but the EVOMS cold air induction kit that was causing the issue
