Just got myself a lovely E46 M3 daily driver, only thing bothering me is the rasp from the exhaust, going through YouTube it seems none really get rid of it? I seem to remember someone saying it was because of the vanos?!

Or will changing the centre x pipe so it? Wouldn't mind it a bit louder but don't want it raspier, as IMHO it sounds shyte biggrin

I think if you change the rear silencer you can get it to be a bit louder and then you might just start loving that sound.

Sounds good inside thr car, well not as good as a csl but hearing an E46 getting driven away hard it sounds like a bunch of wasps being amplified!

The noise is part of the reason many buy the car.

Most aftermarket exhausts seem to get rid of it. That's why so many people don't buy aftermarket, and the reason everyone is after one that retains as much rasp as possible.

I absolutely loved the raspbiggrin! Tried always to drive over 3k and up to 8k just to hear it. In fact I was strongly considered changing the exhaust on my old e46 m3 for a little more power and louder noise but was so worried rasp would be lost.

However best thing to do if unsure is to type e46 m3 exhaust into youtube and you can hear different examples e.g. supersprint exhaust which sounds very good and you can choose which you prefer.

So no-one else think the rasp is the work of the ghey? Dare i say it sounds rice , and many of the aftermkt systems seem to amplify the aforementioned rasp and make it sound even ricier...

I agree.

It's the one thing of my car I'm not overly happy with. I think it just sounds wrong!

However, I'm too reluctant to change the exhaust as I'd rather have the rasp, then a horrible boomy drone at 2500rpm for example. (Not to mention track day noise tests getting ever more strict)

I love it, the sound reverberating off the hangars as I drive to and from work is amazing.

Bought my E46 recently. I'm in the "hate the rasp" camp as well, sounds ok inside the cabin though.

Not really looked into how to get rid of it yet.

foz01 and david h, banned from the m forum!!! that is what makes a m3, as said get a aftermarket if you want it to sound a little different, but you will never get rid of the rasp.

Oh there is one way!.......................

Hiya

I've not been a fan of the 'rasp' ever since the E46 M3 came out and I saw some of the very first ones around here. To me, it isn't 'befitting' of a what a BMW should sound like! so it's definitley a marmite thing!

I think it's the GruppeM rear back box that adds the 'rumble' sound and when driven away the 'rasp' is there but much more muted and there's more of the 'rumble' type sound you'd associate with a BMW!

On a similar level, around my way there's lots of interesting cars being booted around, and one time I do remember whilst walking my doggy thinking what the heck is that car being booted hard and sounding quite rubbish?.. I thought it'd be a japanese screamer of sorts, and I saw a ... 911 go blasting past! I was underwhelmed and immediatley thought that's what a 911 sounds like on full chat?! not impressed. I've seen it around a few times now, and it's a 996 Turbo....

Cheers, Dennis!

Kind of agree.I like the sound when im driving the car but sometimes when i hear another one go by i think jesus is that what they sound like. Sounds like the exhaust is rattling itself off the car!

Searching the subject it throws up rasp pipes, which seem to be the x pipe removal, although YouTube is very difficult to tell what's what due to poor sound quality..
