Anyone used Manning's EU breakdown cover?
Discussion
Just got what appears to be a very good quote for European breakdown cover from Manning (who I use for insurance). It's an annual policy with onward travel cover and so on which comes in at half the price of single trip cover from a well known yellow-liveried breakdown service.
I know a lot of other TVR people use Manning for road insurance, so has anyone here had to call on breakdown cover provided by them overseas?
I'm told they basically have a broker that sub-contracts to local breakdown companies, but I guess that's the same for the big name companies (just somewhat cheaper)?

Chris i have just gone to Mannings & fortunately have not required this service with them but was previously was with Hagerty & had the Tuscan recovered from the Spanish/French border the cover cost £46 & covered all my cars for the year & the service was fantastic not sure if they use the same people but it was cheap & excellent but i am sure someone here will have used it

Griff fuel pump had s**t in it whilst touring Italy (Mille Miglia), stopped and failed to start. The car was collected from Sirmione, taken to local garage, repaired (pump cleaned) at no cost, the Italian mechanic loved the car and settled for a quick blast and a return with him driving. First class cover I thought.
I'm with Britannia Rescue and they are by far the best I've every used in 20 years of car ownership, just recently called them out for my chim (damp problem), although they couldn't start the car they offered to tow it to a garage of my choosing, at a time that was convenient, in the end the following day, when I planned to have it towed it started! £99 per year, covers me and the wife in any car anywhere in Europe, and at home, cannot fault the service or the value for money
I've used it twice - first when the ignition amp went - waited for about 30 mins and a local recovery service picked us up and returned us no problem. Then when we got hit in Belgium by another car. The initial call to their "accident specialists" was quite frankly the poorest service I have ever received - period. We did get home ok but it took a lot of phone calls from me directly to Mannings themselves to get it all sorted and I have to say the Lee from Mannings did an excellent job and I know they had very serious talks with their provider HHB (-hello HHB your service is s
te BTW) about this incident and they ended up using other companies to get us home as HHB were hopeless - and worse than that- didn't seem to care, everything was someone else's problem and they only offered things that they could then claim off someone else.No sincere apologies or anything.
So Mannings - great still with them
their service provider - if it is still is HHB - are rubbish.

Just been speaking to Mannings about this.
Their breakdown cover is an ALPS Policy.
According to the policy summary, insurance is provided by Europ Assistance.
In the Policy details, the RAC Motoring Services appear to be providing the actual cover.
£79 for a 12mth UK Homestart and multi-trip European Cover sounds almost too good to be true, but does appear to be ok.
Just got a quote from the AA (as a member) and they want £103.83 for a single 10 day trip, or £189.78 for an Annual Policy.
That is a big difference!

You're doing well there! My quote for a single trip (as a member of the AA too) was £160 or thereabouts I seem to remember. The RAC was cheaper, but still significantly more for a single trip than Manning was for 12 months. That is a big difference!
I haven't made the call yet, but I think I'm going to.
I guess none of the UK-based companies actually have patrols out there, so whichever you go with you're likely to be at the mercy of a local mechanic who could either be a closet TVR fan with an good grasp of English and supreme technical knowledge, or a halfwit who's employed to smack the village rotavator with a hammer until it starts to work again.
The best advice is probably not to breakdown!

I think I'll be going with Mannings too.
Year before last, Jasper's 100amp fuse went so he had to call out the breakdown services in Portugal, luckily at the hotel.
The mechanic and his mate's eyes were popping out at the sight of all our cars.
Frankly, they were clueless on TVR's - but with a lot of handwaving the car got fixed. Most of the time, someone around will know what needs to be done, it's more a case of having the tools to fix it or simply getting it recovered.
Make sure you check/change your 100amp fuse before you go - they are a pita to get at without a lift.

Can I ask where you read that, because coming up to renewal I was looking into breakdown cover myself and have been considering ALPS.I rang their breakdown call centre and asked if they have any connection or dealings with the RAC and the answer was very much no.
Just to clarify my earlier post....
HHB were the Accident Management company
Europ assist helped to repatriate the car - and it was an English company and driver that came to Belgium to collect it (it then went of a tour of the south of France to collect other cars). Mine was an ALPS policy also

Be thankful they have no connection with RAC as their service is not something you would wish to experience. £1200 worth of damage between car being uplifted from Spanish hotel and delivered to HHC. No re-imbursement as conditions stated that contractors used in Spain did not act as their agents. They even suggested I take the Spanish company to court myself, cheeky fekkers. Second recovery due to accident caused by incompetent other (Tuscan)driver only carried out after I told them I would pay for recovery myself and take action to recover costs on my return to UK. Half an hour later they conceded. They said the onus to recover was my insurance company's even though the policy excluded that. All very stressful when stuck abroad with an un-driveable TIV. Last experience with RAC was when they attended my wife's Audi and didn't return the locking wheelnut key to its place in the boot (or anywhere else in the car) and then lied about it. So after 3 experiences with the RAC which all were treated by their customer services with utter contempt I won't give them a further penny of my hard-earned. Rant over.I rang their breakdown call centre and asked if they have any connection or dealings with the RAC and the answer was very much no.
I have heard good things about the AA's cover, but it is unbelievably expensive for a single trip.
The thing that springs to mind with Manning (and the other specialist insurers) is it's very much an enthusiast's company, so I can imagine they'd be fairly proactive in chasing up local companies if you're marooned somewhere. It's not as if you're talking to someone in a call centre in Mumbai that doesn't know what a TVR is and just wants it to be 5pm so they can leave.
