Having removed box to fix my engine. I have now replaced it and cannot select reverse gear. All 5 forward gears are fine and I have driven some distance with them with no probs. Selector shaft seems to rotate fine against the detent spring but then will not pull back to select the gear. Any of you knowledgeable people have any ideas? I have disconnected all the linkage so problem is within the boxfrown

Hi Mark , have i read text right ? you have tried to select reverse by just using the selector rod coming out of gear box ? if that is the case have you tried adjusting / moving indent plunger ( its at rear of box and accessible ) ,now moving on a bit further the good news is the reverse gear and fork etc are in the end of box , you can get to these bits with out taking box out and as long as rear of car is jacked up a bit no major oil loss ,now my thinking is if you can move the selector rod for and arft to select 1st to 2nd 3rd to 4th etc then its just a side ways movment prob or reverse gear ( at worst ) prob and these parts are all in the end ( the 1st part of box to come off ) just one other thing when/ if you tried to select reverse by the rod coming out of box , you didnt get yourself confused with which way it throws compaired with the stick movement in a back to front sort of way , not taking the mick ( i had a double double look between stick and rod when i took my rear end of box apart ) hope some of that made sence smile, Dal

Hello Mark,

If the only thing that has been possible changed then alter its settings first. Can you select reverse while standing at the rear of the transaxle?

Thank you guys for your interest.
I have checked direction of movement etc. I have disconnected shift linkage completely. the shaft twists against the indent but will not move backwards at this point to select the gear. This maybe because the shaft is not twisting enough or maybe because it just will not select for some other reason. Believe it or not my indents are right forward in the diff housing with this gearbox G50 00. I have not tried adjusting them yet. Yes I realise that reverse gears are at the back. Keep the ideas coming

if you have tried at the box directly then I have no ideas, but if you try from the gear lever my impressions from the factory setup has been either no fith or no reverse. I therefore have altered the gear linkage and am working on a further improved gear selector at the back of the box.

So I think that when I removed gearbox I took the weight on the left-right lever when the fore aft lever was in a selected gear position? Therefore breaking some part of the reverse selector mechanism.
Any thoughts?

Hey Mark,

Worded to ask if you have tried to put it in gear without the linkage not as a stab. You have probably already tried rolling the car around some to get the gears in better alignment as well. I've got no other ideas.

Yeah tried everything now. Will take rear end off to expose reverse gear and selector. If nothing obvious then I will have to get it stripped. I would imagine that it has covered a good few miles although was working fine before I touched it!
Have been offered a 997 turbo box which is quite exiting!

No was busy elsewhere. Will try to get into it during the week. Thanks for your interest. gearboxes completely new to me. Have been looking at drawings and because the rear selector also does 5 th gear which works fine I think my problem will be somewhere else, around the tension plate I guess.
