Sierra steering wheel for the IVA
Discussion
I was looking for a locking steering wheel hub for my westfield in preparation for the IVA and when enquiring about compatibility with the IVA I got this email back.
'Its all very debatable. The inspectors usually fail all non Sierra steering wheels saying they are incompatible with the steering column. This is because the column and wheels pass crash tests as assembled units. After market wheels have not been crash tested and therefore they don't pass them. I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to provide suitable documentation to prevent this but at present nothing has happened'.
So I asked westfield, and they said that they would reccoment using the original sierra wheel!!! This is crazy. can you actully get into the seat with a sierra wheel in the way? Everyone knows it will be chucked away as soon as the car has passed!
Does anyone have any recent axperience of the IVA and any steering wheel issues.....and maybe, do you now have a sierra wheel going spare
Cheers,
Martin

This is one of those items that totally depends on the tester, I passed my test with an OMP steering wheel with a foam pad stuck to the middle/boss, whereas another builder did exactly the same thing and failed
I couldn’t of used the sierra wheel as I had paddles on the column, so was very lucky to get through

Rather than this being a failing of the wheel it may be an interpretation of the padding. In SVA you could add lumps of foam or rubber edge trim to cure sharp edges but the IVA now uses words like "method used by a major manufacturer" this clearly precludes the use of foam and Duck tape.
The pass and fail examples may just have been how well the padding was presented.
At the very least you should fit a crush zone as part of the steering wheel boss.
Ali spokes can be exposed but must comply with edge radius so much simpler to just cover them and the centre with one nicely sculpted foam pad trimmed with vinyl. Momo used to sell a cover but have stopped doing them.
