Right,

Little bit of background I am 28 and generally quite a slim guy, who in the past was quite active through the nature of the job I did - involved a lot of dancing and movement etc and nearly developed something closely regarded as a six pack at one stage...

However, now I take more of a production role, which generally involves a great deal of sitting behind a desk. Now, working in an industry where 'image' is everything I have become aware that everyone else around me is managing to look after themselves a little better than I.

Now, I know that the excersise and healthy diet are essential - I eat healthily, don't really eat much crap but it's the exercise area that defeats me. Mainly because I haven't actually found a form of exercise that I enjoy, apart from tennis and that's not exactly doing a lot! The other problem I have is that I need to know that what I'm actually doing is beneficial otherwise I tend to lose the impetus to actually do it...

So what do we suggest I do in order to remove the tumbly (nicknamed 'Buddha Belly' by my darling wife) and have you any tips to make the process slightly less arduous!

Look forward to your suggestions!

Cheers

Ben

I would suggest that you are eating more than you realise. If you eat only enough calories that you use each day then there is no need to exercise. Simples!

However, if you're like the rest of us, you eat regularly more than you burn off, then we have to compensate by doing additional activity, called 'training'. Cheap and cheerful is walking fast for 45 minutes each day ensuring you get a sweat on (i.e. Create heat from burning calories). Good luck!

If you are interested in overall fitness, but obviously doing something that you enjoy, might I suggest something along the lines of doing a few hours on the bike or if you live near the coast (obviously when the weather improves) maybe enquire about joining your local rowing club to try that out. Or, kayaking (huge sport where I live). One thing I would say, and will probably get flamed for this, is don't bother with the gym, there are loads of better ways to get fit and enjoy yourself. The gym is great for building muscle and strength, but the environment is not really conducive for "enjoyment" as such.

Eating healthily doesn't mean you will lose weight; I have no idea why people in official capacities tell others this (doctors, MPs!). If you eat 5000 cals it's 5000 cals whether it came from chips or salad.

In any case, eat less of whatever you're eating. Also, tennis isn't a bad thing if you actually play rather than use it as a chance to waste an hour walking around the court to pick up the ball because your "opponent" whacked it to the corner you were standing in. Another thing, try Kinect or Wii consoles. A lot of gym members rubbish these and think that classes or whatever is better; if you're not going out and doing something like cycling then gym classes are just as "rubbish" as Kinect/Wii. Think about it.

To lose weight, calories consumed < calories burned (regardless of their source). So you can either consume fewer calories or increase your exercise, or both. If you like playing tennis, play more tennis, against better players (so you run around more).

I probably have a bottle of wine a week, normally over two days at the end of the week. However when I put on the majority of the weight I was drinking a fair amount more...
