Automotive courses at university
Discussion
What are you wanting to do with cars? Work on them, design them, etc..? Colleges will offer more vocational courses, where you'll be learning hands-on skills (welding, repairing, fabrication, etc.), whereas a university course will be heavily theory-based, and will focus on design and testing.
Loughborough Uni in Englandshire does have an automotive course ( http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/tt/courses.html), but I don't think any Scottish unis run a specific automotive engineering degree; it will most likely be a 'Mechanical Engineering with...' type of course. A mechanical or aeromechanical degree will probably be more useful, as it will give you a broader education and make it easier to work in other sectors (oil, nuclear, rail, etc.) should you decide you don't want to work in the car industry, or if the work isn't available.

Strathclyde's Mechanical Engineering department is supposed to be highly regarded and offers (or did) a Mechnical Engineering with Automotive Design. If you go down the route of straight Mechnical Engineering, you could look into getting involved in Formula Student.
Yes, but it does not specifically have to be mech eng to do so.xCiCi05 said:
thank you everyone that has replied. i am more looking into the design of cars rather than the actual hands on work. i will have a look at the places you have suggested but if you find anything else then i would appreciate any advice anyone can give

Coventry is worth a look
yep, although not the most illustrious location. Big automotitive department for years. A mate of mine was a lecturer there for a number of years. tied in with a lot of the F1 teams, and manufacturers based around the area, some good talent there.

What about your architectural technology degree Charlotte?

I have applied to go to Uni this year (September). I have applied for Automotive Engineering at Heriot-Watt and Motorsport Design Engineering at UWS, along with Mechanical Engineering at Strathclyde, Glasgow and Heriot-Watt.
The UWS course is the only of its kind in Scotland, its done in a fantastic building, there aren't many places in each year (only 40), but this can be seen as a benefit and I'm told they are rarely filled. Also it doesnt take many Highers to get into (BCC) which was a big one for me as it's the only course I can get an unconditional offer for. Oh, and its 5 minutes from my house which helps
The Automotive course at HW is more general to do with car design and engineering. For example there is no module on race car set-up like there is at UWS, it leans more towards Mechanical Engineering. Having had a tour of the building I was really impressed. There are more places at HW (95-110 depending on funding), but the entry requirements are higher. I'm not sure of these exactly but a few A's are needed IIRC.
Hope this helps
EDIT: I can't speel and my full stop button seemed to be broken
