Its been done on the grounds of an army training camp for years now. Amateur stuff but still quite a bit of £ goes into the cars.

In true PH manner, i was on route to Tesco and saw the rally going on this evening. Cue me turning around, pulling into a layby and standing for 45 minutes in the dark and rain, peering through some MOD fencing to see the cars go around.

Lots of evo's and scoobies, a couple of nova's, the odd 106/206/clio and quite a few proper decent looking Mk1 Escorts.

The thing that struck me the most was the noise. I was fortunate to be stood by the bend that led up to a long straight, so they hooned it into a bend (a sierra did a nice 180 in the wet too laugh) then would hammer it up the straight, with all that amazing popping and banging coming out of the exhaust. It was like thunder. And sounded amazing. I've always loved the noise of a rally car but was stunned at how good it sounded in real life. Better than sex.

Definately going to have to sneak over to rally GB this year me thinks and see some of the pro's in action.

"Better than sex"

You may want to work on your technique a little mate.

I've seen rally stages and I'm always blown away by the noise and the hiding they give the cars. It is awesome to watch.

If you thought that a single venue event was awesome then get yourself to South Wales next weekend and into the forests for the Wyedean Rally (www.wyedeanrally.com)
Especially worth it as this is the last year that Andy Burton's amazing 306 Cosworth is being allowed to run (thanks for that MSA)

Here he is on the Wyedean a couple of years ago.

I've been around long enough to remember his previous car, the Alfa Ferrari.... now that did make a nice noise!!

I'm really hoping he wins the 'Dean this year, I know no-one who wants the car to stop competing and there's no doubt that attendance at rallies will go down with the retirement of the car.

Yes.i can definatly recommend the wyedean rally in forest of dean (gloucestershire).

Been going for years, and you can stand at the side of the track so can see the action propperly.

The website (http://www.wyedeanrally.com/ ) makes no mention of a charge and, though the last time I went I had press creds, I can't remember there being a charge.. if there is, it'll only be a tenner or something.

Alternatively, buy an OS map, find the stage maps online and get walking!!

It's a full entry of 180 cars this year, mixture of 1400s, historics (mk2s... yum) and the 4wd turbo machines... also the last run for Andy B as I mentioned above, so well worth going just for that!

no there is no charge, as its in the middle of a forest, so would be a bit hard to stop people getting in free.

although all the car parks do charge, but there are pleanty of grass verges to park on.

Theres a few rallies that go past my work in Scotland.

Colin McRae stages, sadly cancelled this year after a fatality. I found this out as I was on my way up the hill to the stage.

Rally Scotland IRC, so professional rallying, for free, on the doorstep.

Not to mention the classic rally that apparently happens where I work. Didn't see that one though, my contract had finished before it was on.

Rallying is fun, go and watch what you can.

And it won well this year too... congrats to Andy, let's hope it's a stellar final season for the car.

Where did you work, which Classic Rally was it?.

Which I suppose brings me around to another point, never mind watching, get out and compete Classic (Road) Rallying is surprisingly economic compared to most motor sport and a hell of a lot of fun too.

This is why I marshal, nothing better than being in the woods (especialy at night) listening to the mk1 -mk2 escorts on full chat, hooning around the stage. I've been fotunate to do start line at a fair few events to, hearing some of the the more expensive kit off the line is great!
Yet to see Burtons 306 cosworth, everytime I've been marshalling an event he brings it to, its broken before I get to see it. Shame its got to go, wonderfully creative bit of kit. For what reason has it been banned though, I've been out of the loop for a while so I'm not up to date with any new MSA rullings.
