I see the government is considering moving the May Day bank holiday to October. They conveniently haven't considered adding an additional Bank holiday.

When the additional May holiday was interoduced back in the 70s, Ireland decided to bring the extra Bank Holiday in in October as they felt there were too many Bank Holidays bunched together in the Easter/May period.

Keep it in May.

Why would I want a day off when the weather is far more likely to be cold and stty.

I expected better of you, Eric. Glad to see you're also fallible in the world of typos. wink

My thoughts too. Anyway, September, May, November, doesn't have a ring to it. yes

And early May is so well known for its balmy conditions.

It does get a little ridiculous when Easter is late, like this year. Its less of an issue when Easter is early.

Forgetting the Royal Wedding additional one-off extra day this year, the run of holidays is 22nd Apr, 25th Apr, 2nd May and 30th May. The autumn doesn't get a single day with almost 4 months from last Monday in August to 25th Dec.

I do think moving the first Monday in May holiday to October would appeal to many - and get the union bosses going as they see it as traditionally the workers day across many countries. It only came in here in the late 70's so its hardly a permanent fixture.

I guess sadly it'll be early on in the month so never be late enough to be Trafalgar Day party because that might be seen to be jingoistic and provocative and might upset our European friends in Spain and France.rolleyes

We don't really have anything else monumental in October to tie it to, so the Tories are thinking of calling it National Day or somesuch which isn't really a British thing. Is it ?

The obvious reason is to shift it into the autumn half term, thus meaning teachers have to work an extra day for no more pay.

Ascension Sunday! Ascension Sunday! The fifteenth Wednesday after Pentecost! The fifteenth Wednesday after Pentecost!'
[/Red Dwarf]

I think some holidays do need spreading out. Some are far too bunched in the same part of the year.

But the May bank holiday seems a very popular one for a lot of people to be moved.

Anyway does anyone remember the Tory idea of a tax free day?

Which is why I said "far more likely".

You've only got to look at historical patterns to see that its likely to be drier and warmer in May than in October.

Not to mention the longer days in May compared to October. wink

There's me thinking that would all be common sense.

You're not factoriong in MMGW abviously. I think they will have to be looking at shifting it to November in 20 years time.

Why October? One in July would be nice. My birthday seems the obvious date. AJS day. It's usually sunny then, and people seem to like going out for a drink on AJS day.

Have it in October around Trafalgar day.

Isn't Mayday something to do with the Commies?

The bunching up of the bank holidays is a pain. Logically when they first introduced an extra bank holiday they should have looked to put it in autumn to start with, they choose the start of may to pay homage to world socialism.

Given the indian summers we often have in our climate it might be just as warm at the start of October as the start of May in any case.

What was the original purpose of bank holidays? I'm all for having public holidays to celebrate significant historical dates however would rather see bank holidays done away with. They are a waste of time and money imo.
