boot release not working

Hi, basically was giving someone a lift and they put their bag in the boot.. dunno whether they jammed it or somthing, but the boot release feels loose, as if the boot is already open. tried pressing down on the boot and pulling it up, but the boot won't open.. also the key i have only locks the doors and operates the ignition, but not the boot.


Does this sound like a broken cable or could it be something else? if it is the cable would i just be able to remove the centre console and pull on the cable?
any help would be much appreciated!
