My mk1 MX5 just keeps going and going. I'd they made a 4 seat version it would be my next car!

Wife's Citroën AX was the biggest piece of st. Will never forget when we finally sold it and the buyer leant on the front wing with the bonnet up and put his hand through the bulkhead join.

Also, what is your perception of what would be bomb proof if you were in the market now?

My old MX-5 was one of only 2 cars that ever failed to start. A loose battery connection and a very cold night...

Mx5 = most unreliable (a victim of FMSH)
RX8 = most reliable (probably because I serviced it myself so the work was actually done)

Reliable - L reg Honda Accord and M reg Carina 1.6 - They just refused to die!

Unreliable - P reg rover 420 Sli - Overheating, underheating, oil leaks, knocking noises and dents just appearing on top of the wings (friend had the same problem on a 620Sli). That car has scared me for life. Whenever i get stuck in traffic, no matter what car i'm in i get worried out the temperature needle...

To be honest i've never had an unreliable car...yes some have been money pits BUT they never let me down, the 928 cost me over twice what i paid for it in tinkering but it never once failed to start or died on me.

I am however (hopefully) buying a TVR next weekend.....

Worst - MG ZR.

Best - any from Toyota Starlet, Clio 197, Fiat Bravo, Fiesta ST, stinking Pug thing. I think the Starlet is the only one from that bunch that won't be a surprise considering it includes an Italian and two frogs. I would also nominate my current Panda if I didn't think it would be the kiss of death.

A ratty 95 spacewagon diesel that has just past 300k. Nothing but an oil and filter every 5k and a check over. Indestructable yoke!

Least reliable was a Pug 405 diseasal, bought cheap 2nd hand as I thought I was getting a bargain...

2nd week of ownership it threw its gearbox
4th week headgasket
3rd month driveshaft
4th month speedo cable
Still in 4th month caught fire.

Quite embarassing when you are a Firefighter and it's your local station who come to put it out.

Most reliable has been my current Citroen Synergie 1.9 TD.

Bought it at just over 100k, now up to 170k after 3 1/2 years ownership with only standard maintenance and nothing has gone wrong.

Most reliable - Citroen Saxo 1.1, a faithful companion in all situations and conditions. Least reliable - Saab (classic) 900.

Least reliable car I've owned is a tie between a Cinquecento and a 206GTi.

Most reliable was probably a (then) brand new 06 Scenic. Put 48000 miles on it in 18 months with nothing going wrong. But as it was brand new, I suppose that'd be expected.

Most reliable used car was a 98 Micra 1.0

Most realiable

93 Rover coupe (1.6l Honda engine) took lots of abuse from me and 6 years on it still has never failed to the family member I sold it too. Passed every MOT as well

Most un realiable

91 Peugout 405 Mi16x4. Spent most of the year I had it on the drive in bits. Clutch went and finding one for the car was impossible so sold it spares or repairs

Most reliable is difficult as I change my cars so damn often - prob my company mk1 Focus TDdi which did 85k miles in 3 years without missing a beat despite being crashed into twice - the alternator only went at 85k as I was running 2 amps and some decent ICE off it. It was still going strong years later at 120k miles as the company pool car.

Most unreliable prob my first car, a Renault 11, but my current mk1 freelander is giving it a good run for its money - I have just bought an Alfa 155 though......

Oh heck, an ALFA 155, I suggest we await a reliability update. Probably some time tomorrow.

Most unreliable - Citroen Saxo VTR. That was a car I should never have put any money into. The quality of the trim was poor, the engine was awful and fizzy and the suspension never felt right. The real problem was that the handbrake didn't work, the handle clicked on but the back wheels didn't lock. In the end, the garage gave me my money back on it, but only after some considerable arguing with them over the legality of a car that passed an MOT with so many obvious faults.

most reliable - Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 petrol (ebony special edition). I bought this with 68,000 miles on it with full service history, and it's been pretty good. Both the rear ball joints were replaced at 69,000 miles and aside from that the only thing that's cost me money is a new slave cylinder for the clutch and a new battery. It runs well, starts every time in any weather. All the electrics work and the seat heaters are still a joy. The only issue it has currently is the engine management light is on as a result of the wiring loom behind the instrument cluster. This was highlighted by Watchdog in 2008 and Ford will do a replacement part and refit for £99. I'd consider getting it done if I was keeping the car, but it's already sold and I'll be handing it over on friday when I pick up my MX-5.

Most reliable is the Octavia TDi by a long long way.

Least reliable must be the Pug 306 I had for a year. Always something needing fixed on a pug
