Right, now you've looked I'll explain.
My long term career goal is to be an airline pilot, but the necessary training will cost me in the region of £70k, maybe slightly more.

As I'm only 21 and the parents aren't loaded there's no way I can afford to fund this training myself.

So, got any ideas of how to go about raising this sort of cash?

One of the ideas I've had is to see if I could use an old airfield like dunsfold or something for a day, ask if any of you guys would like to bring your cars down to have a thrash around the track and advertise it and get people to pay a small amount to be taken around the top gear track etc a few times. You guys would get a free trackday and they'd get the chance to have a passenger ride in some interesting cars. That's just one idea I've had anyway, I'm sure there'll be loads of reasons as to why it's stupid that I'm sure some of you guys will point out, just after ideas that's all!

Cheers for any suggestions,
Rich

You would have to be nuts to spunk 70k cash on the training!

Before you start, yes, I do know how mucha commercial pilot earns.

As has been said, RAF, BA will take people with more than X flying hours under their belt (can't remember what the figure is off the top of my head).

Trouble is they're short on aircraft and long on pilots

Just out of interest, why would they give you Dunsfold (or any other commercial venue) for free?

Having looked into the Military style of life, I don't want that for the rest of my life. As a young lad it was fine, but as I'm growing up I don't want that anymore.
BA may be taking on pilots, but they will need their ATPL licence, it's this that costs £70k

Get a proper job.

The pilot industry charges a fortune and turns out thousands of failures every year.

What makes you think you have what it takes?

It's great to have dreams, but every now and then you need to WAKE UP!

No offense intended but it's this kind of attitude that leads people to fail before they've started... maybe you need to get some ambition and stop kicking other people who have something you clearly lack!

Go for it mate, my cousin in one of the youngest fully qualified pilots in the country, his parents are skint, he paid for it himself by doing everything from working in bars to washing cars, gardening etc. Anything and everything to get what he wanted. Good lcuk to you.

Where there's a will there's a way, normally just plain hard work and sacrifice.

You make out like it's impossible to get a job as a pilot, which it isn't. A family friend was a police officer and then decided he wanted to be a pilot. He paid for the training himself through working and loans(he did most of it over in Florida IIRC) and now works for BA. First step is your private pilots license I would think? Then from what I've heard a good way to get some hours under your belt is to be a PPL instructor for a while? Somebody will probably chime in who knows more than me with regards to the best route to take. Go for it though mate if that's what you'd like to do, it'll take a while but it'll be worth it.

With comments at stupid as that, are there going to be no pilots in 10-15 years time?

The RAF is not the way to go if you want to go commercial, they will sniff you out from the first time you open your mouth at OASC. Whilst it's true that some ex-military do go down the commercial route, it's not the right motive to join the armed forces just for that reason.

Seems like a bloody hard proposition and it may be a bit of a sweeping statement to say that a lot of commercial airline pilots probably come from very priveleged backgrounds...

Have you checked out PPRuNe?

Sure folks, carry on, let the kid dream; it's lovely to have dreams (or goals if you insist) but never lose your grip on reality.

You're 21, and you're coming up with half-arsed schemes to get 70K together.

Why don't you already have a pilot's licence?
You can get one at 16 if you try hard enough.

Why don't you already have the money in the bank?
You've had years to save after all.

Why are you posting on an internet forum with some ridiculous "rent-a-ride" scheme to try and come up with the dosh?
There are such things as employment and banks.

PM me in 5 years time to let me know if you made it...

Your profile is right, you do have a remarkably high opinion of yourself for a service manager. May i suggest that you leave this thread and dont come back.

To the OP, before going down this road you need to know if you are a compatible candidate in the first place. To be an airline pilot you need 20/20 vision (no colour blindness whatsoever), no criminal record and a degree, ideally in maths, physics or engineering however this last part is not crucial. If you achieve all those criteria then give it a go!

You can get sponsored by an airline. My friends sister got a 100k loan to pay for her training. She started at BMI and now works for a middle eastern airline, lives in Dubai and earns 100k tax free...But she does have a 100k loan...

Go read up on the careers websites for airlines.

Also, you will need a degree. What did you study?

Apparently you don't need a degree. Although all the pilots I know have them, I am happy to be corrected smile

Welcome to PH, with your 16 posts in one month.

It's an internet forum; people post their opinions whether you agree with them or not.
If you don't want to hear the answer, then don't ask the question...

Hmmm, My uncle is quite high up in West Lothian Fire Service. Im going to call him tomorrow and see what he says about a 'service manager' called Rubin.

That aside, You've got the most dhead attitude i've ever heard on someone who is at least looking at ways of making money to be successful.

Im guessing you never tried hard in life, Hence your just a service manager.

I'll be in touch.
