My mate asked me to listen to his engine as he said it sounded noisy after a service

It sounded like the tappets needed adjusting but do these engines have self adjusters?

Any ideas?

Hydraulic tappets, which suggests an oil issue of some kind. Check the dipstick, and try and find out what grade was put in.

Ask him if they put flushing oil in it first,nasty stuff causes all manner of problems.

He supplied the oil and is positive that it's the correct grade.

Apart from cleaning the engine what does the flush do?

It moves any gunge/sludge and blocks oil pump strainers and oilways and as said already causes more harm than good,only one way to clean the internals of a
mucky engine and that is to strip it down to component form,You don't need to flush a correctly maintained engine,find out what oil was fitted.

Had a similar issue with a gti 1.8t engine, the cam chain tensioner in the head had worn a large groove which in turn restricted the strainer, be a good idea to take the sump off and the rocker cover to check it out.

Common fault oil strainer blocked. remove sump check strainer.
