My kitchen renovation started yesterday. We moved into the house about 3 months ago and have been planning this ever since. This is what we started with:

It was properly nasty. The previous owners were smokers and we scrubbed it clean for 4 days when we first moved in, and it still wasn't clean, so the first thing to do was rip it out:

Ah, that's much better. I'm really glad to see the back of that. Look at the staining on the walls - that'll all get a good wash down and paint before the new kitchen goes in. But first of all that right hand wall needs to come down to open it up to the dining room

The underfloor heating should be going in tomorrow, then the slate floor is going down. Once that's done the fitters can start fitting the new units.

Once it's finished it should look a bit like this:

Looks tidy. You thought about folding glass doors? So its full width, not just sliding?

Yes, I have been thinking about changing the doors to folding ones. That leads out the the conservatory so would be nice to have the full width open...

Sadly my ceiling won't glow like that. It would be cool though

Some spotlights on the wall cabinets might do it, as long as they're not going to make the ceiling above too hot.

Do you have central heating? Why not install a rad under the small window in the kitchen and another in the dinning room somewhere? Underfloor heating is expensive to run and can go wrong, I know from experience.

Underfloor heating is going to be run from the central heating. It's not the electric stuff it's plumbed in so not expensive to run...

There is currently a rad under that small window - it's being taken out tomorrow.

I had to use a paint scraper to scrape all the grease off the walls before I could even wash them. Heavy smokers too all the woodwork / ceilings are yellow mad

Looks nice. Why the microwave so far away from the cooker though? Dont return the wall units
on the cooker wall and have the microwave on this run at the end. Looks cramped trying to fit
units between window and patio doors. Nice clock there instead :-)

And an odd gap under the window to the left of the cooker, where you might want to put hings down. I'd contine the worktop across.

Hmm, good point about the microwave - I'll see if we can put it in the unit by the cooker

And the worktop doesn't continue along the wall under that window because if it did then

(a) the pull out larder wouldn't, and
(b) the fridge door wouldn't open

It'll be balanced out as the island will be in-line with the end of the worktop. We tried all sorts of layouts and where the fridge is going is the only place it could really go. It's a little alcove (currently an arch to the utility room) that is perfect for 2 larder units with a big fridge in between.

looks great, we did something very similar last year, one tip, we debated white vs black grouting for similar looking floor tiles. went for black and very glad we did, it will turn black anyway!
