My son is looking at Ford Focus's or is that Foci? Main dealer has some 10 plates advertised as direct from Ford motor company; so what exactly does that mean? Ex hire cars perhaps?

Ex-staff cars or press fleet most likely.

Its not unknown for manufacturers to register their own cars to bump up their sales figures.
Bought a car years ago with the manufacturer down as first owner, came with 7 miles on the clock and number plates on the back seat.

when i worked in a dealer these cars were either

ex demonstrators
ford rep company cars
ford press release cars, photos/adverts ect
training cars, stripped and rebuilt a thousand times at training centres
pre reg stock to boost sales figures and hit area targets

More likely the above, highly unlikely to be press cars as they sell thousands of cars through this channel as ex Ford cars and release very few cars to the press in reality to the numbers they sell this way.

Ex rental cars will be registered to the rental firms so visible as such.

I'd buy one.

I'm looking at a Focus. Check out Drive the Deal - they seem to be able to get brand new cars with no previous owners for less than my local garage want to sell me a 6mth old dealer-reg car with 3k miles on it.

Thanks guys! They have a panther black 10 plate 1.6 zetec, which has done just over 14k miles, asking price is £10k; does that sound about right?

Ex ford internal fleet/staff cars, dealer/press demos, or pre reg cars for a multitude of reasons. You still get a good warranty with them and most have extra kit over the standard models.

Looks like DtD will do you a brand spanker for £11,239 + met paint if you want it.

Ford Direct cars are almost exclusively ex-hire, with the rest being demonstrators and press cars. The vast majority of nearly new cars from the volume manufacturers are ex-hire, and an increasingly large proportion of other more 'prestigous' marques are as well.

Unfortunately £10k is the absolute limit as Dad's paying for it!

Well in that case, the panter black seems just the ticket. Worth a haggle though as the new Focus arrives next month and Ford are tripping over themselves to clear all the new-reg old-model stuff knocking around the network.

I don't know the details of the spec difference but the 1.6 style has the same engine as the Zetec and is often quite a bit cheaper (but I know you only get fake alloys).

Ford Direct means they peel the Hertz stickers off, clean them, and send them to the dealers.

Same applies to Network Q where they sometimes peel the Avis stickers off and might run the Hoover over them, "polish" them with a wire wheel and send them to the dealers.

Are you 100% certain that is the whole story? Just 3 of my cars were ford direct and they all came with the history of their previous lives, none came from a rental firm.

Yes that's what bothers me if I'm honest. Don't really want something that's been thrashed to within an inch of its life! Do Hertz etc not register them in their own names then?

I think that most Network Q cars are ex Vauxhall Fleet, the majority of which are from the employee car scheme. I drive one at the moment. One of the main advantages is that you tend to get extra options included over the standard specs.

We bought our Galaxy Ford Direct through a dealer in Derby as we couldnt get a new one in a decent timeframe due to a shortage of diesel engines, sight unseen, it turned up and was totally pristine and we couldnt fault the service, car has been great.

They arent hammered ex rentals as far as I know, ours was an ex Ford management car, I think Ford and other manufacturers have things going with other companies where they run a brand new one for a few months and then it gets put into the used chain, a neighbour gets a new Mondeo every few months and this I think is what he said was the reason, makes sense as not everyone can afford a brand new one, they need a decent supply to their used arm as well.

They do seem to prepare the cars well, ours had two new typres on the front, they hadnt been illegal but were under their prescribed depth.

Why should it bother you? As I stated before, most cars bought nearly new are ex-hire, and most of those will be no more likely to develop problems as opposed to demonstrators or 'one lady owner' types. In fact, they are strictly maintained with OE rubber, serviced accordingly etc. or else the hire company bears severe penalties.

They are usually leased through a third party or on a buy-back scheme, so the name of the hire company itself will not appear on the V5, more than likely some vehicle management company.

Guessing this is from Hyams?

I've had good service from them previously and wouldn't hesitate to recommend. Quite a 'local garage' feel, not much in the way of haggling but knew the value of their stock and priced keenly at the time. Might be worth asking them to dig out the V5 and tell you who is on it.

Assuming I'm right, they've got a Sea Grey 1.6 Zetec for £9K instead - '10 plate on 20,549 miles. (GJ10***) Might be worth saving that £1K for the sake of 6K miles. Service intervals are every 12.5K, so you do want to take that into account (i.e. 14K should have just been done, 20K has one coming up).
