Sports Exhausts - an idiots guide... etc

So, I've recently explored taking pre-cats out. Apart from looking like a b
d of a job for an inexperienced bloke like me, I'm thinking maybe they're best left where they are for now..
So, how else to get slightly more volume via the means of exhaust modifications, as I was only really going to remove the pre-cats in order to install a CliveF style Y piece..
Are there any recommended sports mods, i.e. manufactured back boxes etc. that would do the trick just to get a tad more (decent sounding) noise. Don't need ear splitting, just an increase in volume from the standard 500 sound.
I'd rather avoid ripping the box and taking the stuffing out, instead opting for a purpose built exhaust mod.
Any thoughts, recommendations, advice...

the trouble with the griff exhaust is that it is all welded together, so either you replace the whole system, or, cut the silencer open and sleeve the perforated tubes or replace with proper tubes, which is by far the cheaper method.
That will give you a bit more volume, but the best mod you can do on the exhaust system is to remove the precats in the manifolds, this will give you many advantages, cooler engine bay, engine will breather better making it a bit more responsive, and an increase of up to 8bhp!
its a no brainer in my book, and should be the first thing anyone should do if they want to move away from the standard exhaust set up.if you then want a bit more noise, sleeve the silencer, drive it for a while and decide if its right for you.
at least this way you gradually make the car louder, rather than going full decat in one jump and moan that its too loud

The best advice that anyone gave me with regards to exhausts is to listen to as many as you can in person and then make your decision. Exhausts are a very personal thing and what is right for one person is wrong for another. Most fellow Tiv owners will be more than happy to take you out in their car and explain what it is that they have done.
TVRCC meets are normally a good source of fellow owners. Or put out a plee to local owners on PH which is what I did.

My second favourite was the ACT Cherry Bomb Back box combined with standard manifolds less the pre-cats and Clive Ford's Y-Piece.
So far I have replaced the standard back box with the ACT Cherry bombs and within the next 3 months I will have the pre-cats out and Clive's Y-Piece fitted.

That was a dangerous visit - I come away wanting new suspension, ACT exhaust, a new ECU and supercharger!

Yeah the Tuscan's coming along nicely thanks Matt. The motor's coming together at the moment so should have a second working TVR pretty soon with a monster of a 4.7 AJP under the hood

Oh yeah and the 300mm brake conversion. I think that is more than enough to aspire to for the moment. We would all love all the ACT goodies but....I had Offord's do their sports/cherry bomb mod done to the back box way back in April 2008. It cost £165! I've still got both cats in place and I think it sounds great. Not so loud that you can't enjoy some 'sounds' when cruising, but I can assure you it's loud enough! A good compromise that won't break the bank.

You should get rid of the pre cats to reduce your under bonnet temperature if nothing else IMHOWill give you approx 3hp and will make the exhaust note sound crisper again IMHO
