I have a 92 1.6, and I fancy hearing the induction roar a tad more. Any recommendations?

K&N or Pipercross seem to be popular choices for a spot of induction roar thumbup

Performance panel filters can help a little, but not quite as much fun as a replacement unit for the standard box

Some examples here: http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/index.php/cPath/75_76

(yes, I am very badly resisting at the moment myself! biggrin)

The very best is the JR CAI but they are fairly rare 2nd hand and very expensive new so I'd stick with the K&N or Pipercross options smile

Drill two holes in the cold side of the airbox and pop a brand new mazda filter in

£5 and you WILL hear a change in induction but not have a heat soaked air filter. looks stock, sounds awesome.

can never see how £30 for a panel filter is justified, thats 6 years worth of OEM filters.

I've got a k&n panel filter in a standard (undrilled) airbox that adds a smidgeon more noise and a percieved slight improvement in throttle response...i wouldnt say its added any more power but its livened up what its got quite nicely.

I was going to suggest this. Cheap but effective.

excuse my ignorance... what size holes do you recommend - I've got some pretty big drill bits

A panel filter will last the same amount of time if not longer, plus it does make a percieved difference to throttle response in an undrilled box. I can't comment on whether a drilled box makes any difference other than noise though smile

I trawled through loads of threads on this last night. Looked at pretty much the whole array - drilled boxes, panel filters, cones, cones with shields, cold air ducting from rad opening to cone, ram induction from beneath the windscreen and have reached the conclusion that unless you're going for a proper, purpose built system such as ARC or Jackson Racing Cold Air Intake, then all other, lets say, cheaper solutions, will be compromised in some way

From there, I think it's purely down to you whether a trade off between sucking warm air from the engine bay is worth the addition noise of a £75 pipercross / K&N type cone, or indeed whether drawing that same warm air from the bay via a drilled box is worth the deeper growl under acceleration... confused

I've swayed this way and that and have kinda decided that it'll stay standard

I need to replace my airbox so I thought I'd drill the current one to see what it was like.
I made 4 holes in the cold air side,2 front and 2 wing side,it also has a K N panel filter.
Sounds great under load at 3k and above.
It resonates a bit at tickover but it doesn't bother me.
The car accelerates very well anyway and I'm not sure yet if the holes make any difference. If I notice any drop in power I'll fit the replacement airbox .

This sounds good - as the others say, what size holes, whereabouts on the airbox exactly and the mazda filter part number or what model is it from ?

Thanks
