Child seat - comfortable for long distance
Discussion
Hi,
We're off to France via chunnel in the summer, facing a drive of several hours each way.
My 4 yr old daughter has a basic Britax Hi Liner seat, which is fine for fairly short trips, but my question is - can anyone recommend a more comfortable seat, i.e. has some adjustment, additional padding, potentially a level of recline, while still being secure?
Thank you,
Dom

Obviously might be cheaper elsewhere - seems to be extremely comfortable for our taller than average 2 and 4 year olds

Have a look at the recaro start. They are made with an aluminium frame just like a proper car seat, rather than the moulded plastic with a thin fabric cover. Kids dont get so sweaty and hot and so complain less.
I bought one just before a 3 week trip round france (that very hot summer in 2003) no complaints from the little one. Same seat used in the mojave desert - no sweat in 45c

Hi,
Thanks for the info guys, now I just need the in-car DVD...
Just researching the same thing! Thanks for the info guys, now I just need the in-car DVD...
We're currently using NextBase, but they haven't lasted well at all.
Costco are selling a Coby system for £101.98 all through Feb - but that appears to be a too-cheap solution as well.
Which Nextbase did you have out of interest?
I'm looking at this one for my 2 kids http://www.incardvduk.co.uk/Nextbase-Click-Go-7-Du...
I dont want to buy it if they're rubbish though
Cheers

I dont think any of them last terribly well, the back of your car is a pretty hostile place for delicate dvd transports etc. Not to mention being operated by kids. A few years ago I got the cheapest twin screen set from tesco - about 100 quid iirc. It lasted a couple of years. the transport failed. Got another one from walmart in canada, so far thats lasted 2 years, but the connectors are held together with duck tape. When it conks out I think I will replace with an ipad, which will also save having loads of discs in the back of the car
I have the Nextbase Click system and after a year, one of the screens packed up. Doubtless part of that is that it was the lesser used screen and a car is a very cold and hostile place for electrical equipment but hey, even with a click system, I can't be arsed taking screens out at night as well as the kids and all their chattels.
The other screen is still going strong after 18 months but the wiring is a giant PITA especially with headphones as well. It's like spaghetti junction back there even trying to tie many of the wires into bundles.
In the Mazda 5 we had a system hard-wired into the roof. It was way better and kept it out of the reach of tiny hands and with a wireless headphone system would no doubt be better still. It certainly kept the rear tidy and stopped the kids jumping out with wires wrapped round their feet.

Our Nextbases are quite old - not sure of the year. One of them has a problem with the hinge and doesn't read well after closing the door. Needs a few slams to make it work.I'm looking at this one for my 2 kids http://www.incardvduk.co.uk/Nextbase-Click-Go-7-Du...

However - after a day of research, I've also decided the Click Go 7" deluxe is the best option. It's considerably cheaper for a basic package on Amazon. We've only ever used the batteries once or twice with the current units.

Update - our click duo 7 deluxe kit has arrived. Looks very neat and tidy compared to our older kit. I haven't installed it in the car yet, but I'm pleased so far.
The units are powered by a Y-cable, so only one socket used for 2 DVD players
I never did work out how to get the same film playing on the two. Since one went phut, it's no longer a problem. Bonus! The units are powered by a Y-cable, so only one socket used for 2 DVD players

And now I'm starting to regret buying these Nextbase players. Having tested out both units thoroughly...
One of them can only play one of our Fireman Sam DVDs - and that's it. Neither of them can read from a USB stick. There doesn't seem to be a way of linking them to show the same film on both units.

We bought the cheapest portable DVD unit in Argos (£50), together with a carry case that allows it to be strapped to the rear of the front seat. It's been on numerous flights and car journeys and is still working perfectly. Being removable from the car, an added bonus is that you can plug it into any TV (hotel room, villa etc.) and can also be taken into restaurants to keep the sprogs quiet, especially when waiting for your food to arrive.
Sorry to sound a sourpuss - but what happened to eye spy and car cricket? isnt interacting with your child a better proposition for future family bonding??
NB - as a bit of a geek on these things - kids under 2 should NOT be in a child seat for 2 hours or more. You are looking at a lifetime of pain and agony. That means, dont just unplug it and carry them round in because they are asleep. Its a tough life, you should wake them and "be a parent" it was in the deal you signed up for when you decided to have them...
rant over.

I bought mine on the premise that was wahat they were claiming and assumed it was down to my stupidity. the other annoying thing is the remote operates both so when you have two kids watching different DVDs, the remote can be used as a weapon of antagonism. Again, cured by the phutting of the one unit. One of them can only play one of our Fireman Sam DVDs - and that's it. Neither of them can read from a USB stick. The one in the Mazda roof may have been a £900 option but in 4 years, it never missed a beat.
