Hi all,

I'm thinking about installing a Megasquirt system to my Griff 500, either the "Fuel with Wasted Spark Ignition Control (Directly Fired Coils)" or the Semi-Sequential system.

I've had a look at www.extraefi.co.uk and www.v8developments.co.uk but it's all a bit technical for me. I've also done a search on PH and whilst there are a lot of recommendations, I can't seem to find details of the real benefits. Can anyone tell me what the expected benefits are in terms of fuel economy and performance?

Thanks in advance.

unless you are going to play with a wild cam, I`d leave it as standard colin.

Some years ago I didn't understand fuel injection. Before I changed my intake system and cam, I built a Megasquirt, made a small harness on a bench with injectors, TPS etc.. and learnt how it works before installing it. By using an old ecu connector and building a adapter cable, you can swap back to the std ecu at will (as long as your engine mods will allow).

I then spend many enjoyble hours (with a few frustraing ones too) tuning and testing.. then began my ungrades.

I now have an upgraded engine, a tunable ecu that you can monitor and log and well as a better understanding how the Griff is running.

You need lots of time, patience and passion for being a tinkerer.. if that's you go ahead as there is a larger MS community to help you.

I think if you want to put it in a nutshell you can program the MS system to suit what the engine needs, not what the emmisions standards are. The 14CUX was programmed so that Range rovers and the like could be sold in the USA with the tight emmision controls built in, that post 1992 Griff's will also run. This can lead to some poor low speed running when high performance cams are used, but certainly not in all cases. If you cars running OK its probibly best to leave it as is. The MS system is a whole lot smarter than the 14CUX, and wasted spark and mapped ignition is a whole lot better than a distributor, but having spent your £1000 on the whole set up and lots of tinkering, the real world gains in terms of MPG may never cover the investment cost.
