I could count on 1 hand the amount of Vixens and Granturas I have seen advertised on her in the last 3 years. Do people ever sell them or keep them and grow old with them?
Maybe people sell them by word of mouth through TVRCC or the like? Even heaps in need of restoration seem to be rare now.

I sold my 65 Griffith 400 15 months ago but PH is not the best place to list such a car. Maybe OK for cars up to £15k but mine went for £52k so I needed a wider market. There are several Griffs currently up for sale - but not on PH

Given their value as race cars, if I were to sell one of my MkIII Granturas, I would choose other places first.

In the overall scheme of things Vixens and Granturas are very rare. 50 years of neglect and abuse have accounted for quite a large percentage. Most which survived are now abroad and will never come back. Mk1 and Mk2 Granturas are very difficult to restore, historically have never had enough value for people to properly restore many and are not brilliant to drive. Parts availabilty is poor and little demand to remanufacture in small batches( I know because I have offered on numerous occasions to remanufacture rare parts and found people would not pay for them).
Of approximately 90 Grantura Mk3,s, many have been converted to "replica" Griffiths, most of the rest are FIA race cars and I can count on your one hand the number of road cars there are worldwide.
1800S and Vixen S1 are rare, many have been converted to V8 or are living abroad.
As far as Vixens go, much of the same, most now living abroad. Lots have been converted to "replica" Tuscan V8,s and few are running road cars.
If you trawl the right places there are early cars for sale but they obviously get snapped up quickly, in recent years almost exclusively by foreign buyers. I used to always have 12 or more Classic TVR,s for sale at any one time, David Geralds probably more but I can no longer find any stock. There is a Vixen for sale in the classifieds on here, Jim Lowry is advertising a rare Grantura Mk3 which is a road car and I have both a Vixen and a Mk3 Grantura available. Few "M" Series cars for sale including a 3000M and a 2500M on ebay. Nice 3000M, 3000S and a Taimar Turbo for sale in classifieds,I,ve got an honest 3000S for sale but it is getting difficult to find cars.

Noticed that the M Series for sale at David Geralds was snapped up within 2/3 days...
Huge demand in the UK for TVR classics , amongst existing owners [ including myself ] and drivers new to TVR ownership , and I suppose our European colleagues are willing to pay the premium prices that the best cars command to have the privelege of owning & driving these classics..
5 years ago there was a choice of Vixens / M / Taimars thru the year but not now! Pity..

B

I have kept a close eye on the Vixen market for the last 15 mths as it took me 9 mths to find myself a Vixen that I was happy with. In that time I have seen advertised the following Vixens advertised for sale :

Date Advertised In Model Condition Price

11/09 Car & Classic S3 Good £10k
05/10 Pistonheads S2 Poor £7.5k
07/10 David Gerald S2 Rest. Project £5k
07/10 Pistonheads S2 OK £6.75k
07/10 Pistonheads S1 Good £8k
07/10 Pistonheads S4 Rebuilt £13.25k
08/10 David Gerald S3 Avg £8k
08/10 Pistonheads S3 Rebuilt £17.5k
08/10 Pistonheads S2 Rest. Project £4.5k
09/10 TVRCC S3 Good £9.9k
11/10 TVRCC S2 V Good £15k
11/10 Pistonheads S3 V Good £15k
11/10 TVRCC S1 Rest. Project £4.5k

In addition to these, I was also offered 2 other cars by people who heard that I was looking. So that's 15 Vixens in 15 months. They are certainly fetching strong money and demand does seem to be outstripping supply as most of the above got snapped up within hours or days. However some did hang around for a while as the asking price was top end for the condition of the car.

I would suggest that if anyone is interested in buying a 'classic' Tiv, don't panic just know what you want, watch the market and when one comes up be prepared to move very quickly or someone will beat you to it.

I remember feeling like a pauper at the City TVR meets in the late '90s when I mentioned what TVR I drove.

Seems a different story these days. smile

I am happy with my Chim and will probably never sell her. I do love Vixen's but havn't seen many in the classifieds.
Having said that, I was at last years Chatsworth get together and the car I spent the most time admiring was certainly the red Grantura lick

Simple answer to the question is NO people don't seem to sell their classics. Ive been searching seriously for 12 months now and looking even before that, and when i say seriously i mean daily and probably lucky that my missus still speaks to me. Anyway ive learned lessons along the way and probably missed one or two that i really should have bought, one a vixen and one a grantura, both resto projects. Last week after a post on here i thought my luck had changed when one gent offered me the potential of buying his vixen that had been stood idle for some while and after a couple of visits and a ride in the car i was smitten and changed my mind as to the state of project i was looking for, problem for me being that the guy had realised after all that he could not part with it, no hard feelings though as i completely understand after the time he has owned it.
Anyway the fact is that people do seem to lock these things away which makes it hard for the folks like myself (trying to get back into ownership)to come accross them in the classifieds as word of mouth seems to be the only way to aquire half decent ones at decent money so i am about to get down on my hands and knees and beg all you good folks out there to go and have a look in the corner of your garage, yes thats it go on, is there a vixen there that is crying out to be restored, finished or whatever.
My budget has now increased (because it seems it has to) and i have up to 8k for the right car, suerely that should get me something from a resto to a finish off project, i know really good examples are asking good money but i also know that some of them are completely over inflated.
This is a man in need (although not a fool) with a last ditch attempt before i go and buy the missus an MX5. NOW WHO WANTS THAT ON THEIR CONSCIENCE.
DO PEOPLE SELL THEIR CLASSICS!!!

One owner from new fully rebuilt 3000S in BRG....any takers OR a 3000S fully rebuilt 5 speed in white both looking for good homes....neither car will go to being advertised ANYWHERE, the owners would never want tyre kickers intruding on there privacy, perhaps that's one reason for the the topic title ....Adrian@

Sorry Gary, no to the MX5.
A 3000s or M might have to become an alternative eventually but a Vixen is the dream. Cheers Adrian.
