Also what are Jag after sales like any worse than Merc....
Best bet is to find a good Jaguar Independant to service the carYou could join www.xkec.co.uk a lot of good information for members

R is supercharged - giving about another 100 BHP in 4.2l guise and the potencial to liberate quite a few more with a bit of light and inexpensive tuning. Many options also appear as standard on the R also
James what options are must on a XKR, Sat Nav and leather are a must but are these std.NormanD said:

Car will have manufactures warranty so will go to main dealer, just in case there's a problem with an indy doing service work and Jag may try to wriggle out it there's a claim. You could join www.xkec.co.uk a lot of good information for members

Having a troll through the classified there are XK's that are supercharged, so what would be the difference between that car and a XKR...Noticed there's a 5L & 4.2L which is better....
Interesting dilema as you could probably get a 5.0 XK in your price range or a late 4.2 XKR. The 5.0 XKR are still mid £50k.Edited by jomcvelia on Wednesday 9th February 13:21
The 5.0 engine is a cracker plus you'd get the newer updated interior (XF gear selector) and exterior changes, and the trick differential. I also think performance wise there's not a huge difference between a 5.0 XK and a 4.2 XKR. The 5.0 XKR is in a different league!
Suggest trying both to see which you prefer.

The XK is not slow, and I would argue sounds better and is more fun as the power is more progressive. The XKR goes instantly from waft to space rocket mode. Most important items are standard, but if it was me I would be looking for the following on an XK:-
1. 20" Senta/Kalimnos alloys
2. Front parking sensors
3. Burr walnut (matter of taste I know)
4. Adaptive(ie Radar)Cruise Control(makes motorway cruising in traffic a breeze)
I'm sure that Bowers & Wilkins sound system is nice but I could live without it. I would also avoid the XK60 bodykit which looks heavy. As of MY 2009 (mid-2008) the 4.2 engine was dropped for a 5.0, which is sublime. Your budget of £45k will get you a 5.0 but maybe not an R - check out the Jaguar approved used site.
Taggarts Glasgow have a beautiful 2008 XK 5.0 Portfolio in Azure Blue with black leather with - you won't believe this - 3,850 miles up, for £43k. Might as well be new. Check it out. Good luck.

I have driven the 5Lt XKR a good carMy 1999 XKR will still beat it though
OK it's not quite a standard XKR then
Maybe you could get nearer to the 1000BHP mark

Norman, haven't you thought of upgrading to the 5L and applying all the mods to that?

That is in my mindMaybe you could get nearer to the 1000BHP mark

Just got to sort out the manual conversion first though
Enough problems with the electronics there
The other thing is to just bin all the Jaguar electrics then
the machanics will be a piece of cake for the engine and gearbox

Was thinking along the colour lines of black of dark blue however that frost blue does look nice. Most important items are standard, but if it was me I would be looking for the following on an XK:-

Any views on the convertibles, any loss in handling, any scuttle shake...
The coupe has the cleaner line, lighter and has to be stiffer.
Azure Blue is a stunning colour which was replaced by Frost Blue in 2010. The Frost Blue doesn't look bad, but it is a wedding cake icing kind of colour - not dissimilar to a colour Jaguar had in the 60's. Azure blue is a cooler more subtle colour.

If it were my choice, I'd have a 5.0l Coupe in Graphite or Azure blue- The dogs b#**#*ks.In fact I'm going to raid the kids money boxes now and have a look in classified. Oh to answer your question, I've tried both variants of the 4.2 and 5.0 and to be honest unless you're going to drive it at 9/10ths all the time get the non supercharged.
The 5l sounds nice but realistically you can’t go wrong with the 4.2l Supercharged. It really depends on striking the right balance between the options you want, price, and performance, and being prepared to trade-off the less important things.
IMO: Definitely get the R.
I have an XK8, great car, very drivable, and very happy with it although I regret 2 things: not getting an R (I’m a petrol head from way back, the more horses the better), and not having Sat Nav in mine, it adds to future resale value.
Aesthetically, I definitely prefer the coupe (personally).
Hope you find a good one.
