As per the thread title.

I'm thinking of doing it in my car this summer as its supposed to be beautiful/stunning and everything you'd expect Bavaria to be.

Any body have any thoughts?

I'm particularly interested in where people would stay overnight en-route and where they would stay just for an hour or two's sightseeing before moving on ie:

Wurzburg
Rothenburg
Dinkelsbuhl
Augsburg
Steingaden (Pfaffenwinkel)
Landesberg
Fussen

Cheers in advance - all advice welcome.

There's a nice road from Fussen south then east past a lake and up to Oberammergau and then to the White Church and back - the big castle is always really busy but the small one is neat (sorry can't recall names) - Kempten is good for a night - Bayerischehof - there's lots of Roman stuff in the area - some better than others - be prepared to eat lots of pig - Augsburg was Ok for a couple of days

Hi there wavey

We are going to do this in the summer. I started a thread on German towns etc

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

which may be of some interest. I have to say that we are planning to drive it in a day staying at Wurzburg at one end and Fussen at the other. We will stop en route a couple of times and plan to visit a castle or two and Gremany's highest mountain when based in Fussen

If you want please PM me and I will send you the links to the hotels we looked at

Hi Graham

Thanks for that - I'll PM you tonight. I'm doing exactly the same route as you and as we speak have just booked the first hotel in Rothenberg for 2 nights.

My next stops on the route will be:

Augsberg - 1 night
Fussen - 2 nights

Then on to Koblenz for a night before the trek back to the eurotunnel at calais.

Thanks also johnnyreggae (I'm old enough to remember a single named that - did you take your ph name from that record?)

We stayed in Hopfen on the lake just outside Fussen - if it rains the town museum in Fussen is ok and had a good lunch in the restaurant in its back garden - the towns by Lake Constanz were very busy & not too interesting but the drive there pretty

It's a great drive and some great places to see and stay - easily one of my favourite areas in Europe.

We stayed in Wurzburg, Augsburg and Fussen (well actually Schwangau just outside of Fussen)

Cannot speak highly enough of this place, reasonable rates, very friendly and great food.
