I know thread's like this have been done a few times but hey one more shouldn't hurt.

I'm 18 and living in Coventry, I completed a BTEC national diploma in Motorsport engineering last July, and in September of last year I worked for a month with a race team called Speedsport Promotions, Primarily they ran in the Euro F3 series but ran with/under Team West-tec. I have worked on other vehicles such as Classic Formula Juniors, Formula Ford 1600's and I also have helped with the rebuilding of an 80's F1 car, thus most of my experience is with single seaters. Unfortunately due to the season coming to a close it wasn't a wise move (from their point of view) to employ another staff member.

So at current i'm ideally looking for a career in motorsport but I understand that experience is key.

Basically i'm looking for any teams that may be looking for a fairly competant and willing young guy to help out and to most of all learn.

Obviously the closer to Coventry the better as at current I don't have my own transport, I would relocate if needs be and I have family members in Somerset and Wiltshire if that helps?

Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance smile

Tom.

Pity you didn't post this a few months ago, JontyR was looking for a motorsports apprentice based in Wiltshire! I was looking at this a while ago myself, the common answer seemed to be, something like just heading down to a few tracks and offering free help to some teams, if they want you, they might request for you to appear at other circuits and possibly even pay you a bit here and there. It's all experience after all! Good luck mate

i was in a similar position 12 months ago. you have not missed the boat, some teams won't have even started testing. what i did was send a cv with covering letter to as many teams as possible saying what experience i have and what i was looking for. it started slow in jan-feb as you would expect but i went testing with fomula ford teams and BGT team and by may-june i was choosing which events i wanted to work at. it was very tough and some weekends i ended up out of pocket. i even worked 63 hours in 3 days at spa for £30. once you have been and help a few teams you will build up a phone book of team owners and managers, get to know their calendars and call them up a week in advance of a race meeting asking if they need extra help.
i did this for almost a year living off student loan and overdraft, but it payed off in the end. it was also some of the most fun i have ever had.

the one thing i had that may cause you issues is not having a car.

My nine year old is desperate to go in to this line, what can he do at his age to assist?

He reads, everything, and he absorbs it. Are there any books/manuals you'd suggest? We're not far from Bedford Autodrome, he wants to write and ask for work! He'd love to assist in a garage, etc - I know his age will be a H&S issue, but surely there's something he can do? Or somewhere he could spend his weekends.
