Rift

I've never really been one for these sorts of games and WoW etc have previously turned me off (primarily due to the art style) but for some reason I decided to give Rift a go. I'd seen a number of different sources laud it's PVP and PVE style and the fact that the Rifts themselves can become enormous conflict zones without having to wait in queues to get into a fight (as an Eve player this is important to me!)

So I signed up and popped onto the Beta. Now I clearly have a lot to learn about this sort of game but once I started considering it and the controls etc in the style of Dragon Age it started making a bit more sense and I started having pretty good fun. It's hard enough to keep a solo player interested and the group events and PVP sound well worked out (I didn't get the chance to try them yet as the Beta event closed for a week)

What's interesting is that I've been thinking about it over the last few days since they switched the Beta off...I want to play it again and that's a very good sign in my eyes.

Has anyone else looked at it / is anyone considering giving it a go?

I've been playing the Beta over the weekend from the PoV of a WoW verteran...

It's very very pretty but not quite as visually polished as WoW with a few more artefacts glitching from tiem to time.

On full 'Ultra' settings it's stunning but sadly there are bugs with it and Crossfire meaning random hangs. Turned down a bit and with Crossfire disabled it's very playable.

The game-play is so close to WoW it's easy to get going with, questing is more TBC than Cata.

The soul system is interesting but the game still boils down to the MMO-trinity of Tank-Healer-DPS.

The rift events are fun but a bit manic.

All-in-all worth trying out I think particularly if you want your MMO fix but Cata hasn't grabbed you.

I have watched quite a few Rift videos, and I must admit I am a bit underwhelmed. It looks glossy, and the graphics are clearly a generation on from WoW (but ironically still at least a generation behind things like Oblivion). The end-game doesn't seem to be up to much, so basically you have a really glossy version of WoW with the same go-here-and-kill-20-whatever quests. When people realise this, you can expect to see it go Free To Play some time around the start of the summer holidays.

Talking of WoW, Blizz have really dropped a b*llock with patch 4.1. Total new content: Two rehashed old raid dungeons made into 5-mans. No Firelands raid because Blizz say "people aren't ready for it yet, they haven't finished the ones we already put in". Which sounds a bit of a "dog ate my homework" excuse for something they just haven't had the resources to finish on time.

Bought the full version over the weekend to play between raiding in WoW.

Being in from the start I'm seeing some very very quiet servers - chose a low-pop shard for this very reason.

If you want to get into a MMORPG then I'd reccommend this. If you're bored with WoW then it's worth a try.

Not done any PvP or Instances yet though.

That's interesting Iain, a lot of the feedback I've seen on Twitter (U.S. mostly) has been complaining about server queues, I guess the Euro servers aren't as congested.

Too far the other way if anything.

Had some horrible lag spikes though last night while soloing a rift event (not uncommon with so few around on the server).

Other frustrations:
- Mobs in some areas way to close packed for the player frequency, respawns way too quick at tiems meaning deaths are not uncommon.
- Terrible Auction House UI.

Playing a Ranger/Marksman/Saboteur combo (essentially a wow hunter) and it's a lot of fun.

Rift went F2P recently and I've been playing it over the last few weeks - really like it and it reminds me of all that was good about early WOW.

Saw this, so downloaded and started playing at the weekend... i did fall into a hole and played for like 4 hours straight Oops !

Enjoying it tho, sticking with my level 14 bard at the moment as support which seems to be a fun and easy enough to get into instances !
