MG ZT 260 - opinions?
Discussion
Really interested in these now following on from the Monaro thread.
MPG aside, what are they like to live with? How are other running costs - servicing, parts, types etc?
Any Achilles heels?
They seem like cracking value and maybe what I am looking for to fulfill my practical, loud but not wallet rapey, criteria.
Any personal experiences warmly received.

I believe the one in the picture above was mine!
Pro's... Very comfortable to drive. Decent bit of power from the Ford V8. Really nice soundtrack from aftermarket exhausts (or lack of). Impressive array of equipment, many colour trim options. Fairly active Forum.
Con's... Expensive tyres last 7-12 K miles. Rear brake discs £325.00 each. Handbrake cables fail, and are like hen's teeth. Radiators explode. Very few knowledgeable mechanics when repair needed. Parts can be difficult to obtain. 3,000 mile service periods. Even minor jobs require engine to be dropped/removed. The hoped-for increase in value as they got older is not happening. Problems with coolant hose splitting. Rear springs break. Heater valve fails.
Had one, enjoyed it immensely while it worked, wouldn't buy another. I bought a Cerbera to replace it,better performance, better reliability and cheaper to run!

They are a rover! nuff said!
which was engineered when BMW owned the company, has a mustang engine in it, and is rear wheel drive. They're very well specced cars- If memory serves, the gearbox and suspension engine are supposed to be quite decent spec, and theres a limited slip diff waiting for you at the rear. Engine is a little old hat, and doesn't really produce that much power, so the car is face warpingly quick, but still has some pace. It likes to guzzle fuel.
I believe a company called dreadnought used to do a supercharger for them, but im not sure if they still do. I once saw a factory supercharged model for sale at SMC in slough, a few years ago- apparently it was a development car. It was a tourer, in red. I wonder what happened to it?

They stil fit them, for just over £7K, some people who've had them fitted have had som pretty interesting engine failures!
well built, well engineered great sound track, comfy ride once it has done 5k miles.
owned mine for 3 years from new.
13 tyres ( one was a blow out !) ouch
it is the only car i really regret selling !

small plug for owners club
oh yes , nearly forgot...mine was left hand drive ...manual
even more fun

From a Ford V8?! I thought they were supposed to run forever on fairly basic maintenance.
'Extreme duty' schedule on that engine is every 3K miles have no idea why Rover would have specified this schedule as the engine isn't in a high state of tune. In any case assuming you can get 10W40 semi synthetic cheaply and know how to undo a sump plug and spin off a filter I don't think basic maintenance is costly. As for supercharger failures the modular V8 seems to run them with very few failures upto around 500bhp in S197 guise. I have no idea whether Rover have somehow created cooling or other issues for it in the 75 application but it's a tough engine otherwise.

Dreadnought supercharger mod gives, on average, 385 BHP. this engine is only the 2 valve per cylinder one so not as tuneable as some of the better ford lumps!
