Hello, we're off on our honeymoon in April, and annoyingly it's also her birthday while we're in San Francisco, so I'd like to take her to a quality restaurant.

Any recommendations for a decent fine dining place that isn't too formal?

If it is still there look out for Alioto's on Fishermans Warf. Back in 1990 it served the best lobster and mixed sefood meal I have eaten to this day.

Two of my favourite restaurants in SF

http://www.thestinkingrose.com/
http://www.foreigncinema.com/

Foreign Cinema is amazing. You sit in a big quandrangle and on one wall the project classic foreign movies and it really makes for a great ambience

Also, check out Supperclub. I've been to the one in Amsterdam a few times and it's fantastic. SF one looks equally good.

Tadich Grill

If you can, try and sit at the bar rather than a table or booth. It's good fun and the food - seafood orientated menu is good as well.

Epic Roasthouse

Expensive but the steaks are beyond reproach. Good selection of Bourbons too.

Very good cocktails. It reminded me a little of Fat Sams place in the film Bugsy. I had a very posh burger which was excellent.

I am back over there early next month for 10 days so i will be looking other recommendations too.

Some of those look very nice.

Looks like I'll not have trouble sorting her birthday and the other nights too.

I can second The Stinking Rose, awesome place. If you're looking for the ultimate in burgers, head for Mikes at the Crossroads in Cotati, about an hour north of the city - you'll never find a better burger:

Stinking rose in LA was nice (as long as you like garlic), SF should be no different.

Pudding here maybe? http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-cheesecake-factory-san... Nice view.
