200sx Rev Counter

Hi All
Just bought a 200sx but it has aslight problem, taking to a friends tonight to see if we can fix it was hoping some of the bright sparks on here may have some ideas as to the problem.
The problem is that the rev counter doesn't work - it flickers a bit and kind of moves up when you revthe engine but never gets about about 1000rpm am thinking thats it an electrical problem perhaps a shorting wire?
