Having lived for 10 years in Germany when I was a kid, I've always been a huge fan of German food (particularly Jaegerschnitzel, Bratwürst and Currywürst). I can make Jaegerschnitzel myself, and I've been able to get Bratwürst for a while now thanks to Lidl, but I have only just managed to get hold of a bottle this stuff :

... which is a ketchup with curry. pepper, paprika, chillis etc. When used in liberal quantities with a chopped up Bratwürst, it makes the legendary Currywürst. This is a fast food snack which is massively popular in Germany and particularly in Berlin... they even have a Currywürst Museum there!

Have just tasted it, and it's awesome. Not as sweet as ketchup, a slightly smoky flavour with a gentle spicy/tangy kick, with a slow lingering burn at the back of the throat... not very hot, more of a tingle. It's EXACTLY how I remember it from my childhood. I'm not a big ketchup fan, but this really isn't anything like ketchup. I could have this on everything, never mind just making Currywürst!

I love currywurst and indulge everytime I'm in Germany, which is a few times a year. I assume this is another offering from Lidl? Not sure where my nearest one is, but will make the effort to locate it yum

Not a big fan myself. Quite happy to eat them. Despite the iconic cultural status, it's only a hot dog in some spicy tomato sauce. Nice enough, but where did the hype come from?

Know what you mean, but to be fair, you could say the same about fish & chips.

Best way is normal tomato sauce, heated in a pan, and then with curry powder sprinkled over the top of it when you put it on the sausage. Mmm.

Raised to "icon" status, I believe, by Chancellor Gerhard Schröder's love of the sausage smile

I have seen it on a few menus as Kanzlerfillet, the Chancellor's fillet. A bit like Wilson's Gravy !

I'm not a fan of ketchups and sauces, but on the other side of the world we do have a German butcher who makes spicy Hungarian sausages (Debrezina), as one would expect with Hungarian food the main constituent is paprika.

Cooked on even a gas barbacue they are superb.

This is what they call in Germany 'Currywurst mit pommes'... and to keep it authentically German, a nice big dollop of mayo on the chips!

Marvellous.

I do think though that half the pleasure of eating 'currywurst mit pommes weiss' is that it means I'm in Germany.
