Been getting all sorts of quotes from all sorts of Google-found companies. Anyone with specific plusses or minuses against any of them?

Are you looking at a wet or dry system?

Can't help with recommendations but, might be worth having a look at This Thread as there is mention of PolyPipe UH.

You could always keep your options open and arrange to have the pipes installed in the slab - and do everything else later.

You need something like 5 metres of 12/16 Pex pipe per square metre of floor area, and it should be less than one pound a metre (plus laying cost).

I've no idea of building codes and standards in the UK, but I would suggest your concrete slab with the pipes in is at least 100mm deep.

This allows for a lot of energy storage and will reduce the temperature fluctuations in the house - rather than being quick acting (with a screed), it will retain enough energy for some considerable time - and tends to be a better solution when using a heat pump.

top tip is to not have it under where your bin is otherwise it sweats!

We had a NuHeat system (wet system run off an oil fired boiler) installed in our new build 8 years ago and I'm very happy with it. Under floor down stairs and radiators upstairs.

Ours was done by Selfbuild and Contract Floors Ltd, based in Yorkshire, but happy to travel around the country for a project. Their website is here, but seems to be having problems at the moment - http://selfbuildfloors.co.uk/

They did an excellent job (liquid screed, wet UFH run off a combination of solar, wood, lpg and anything else we fancy), and the price was good. Highly recommended.
