Discussion
I passed my IVA July last year and was told by the DVLA that an MOT is required 3 years after IVA (age related, non Q).
Edited to say, just found this...

my iva went through as 10 plate but after dvla inspection they gave me 99 plate due to engine age,now dvla tell me i should have had mot from when it got iva 6 months ago despite fact THEY issued road tax direct so basically their fault back then now say my problem now by needing an mot by end of feb in order to get road tax!

What does your V5 say? My car's registered '88 so F reg and the section 3, Special Notes on my V5 says; 1) Rebuilt - assembled from parts some or all of which were not new; 2) SVA Cert issued 26.06 2009 Emission limit - %CO4.5; HC 0.12.
As I said earlier girlie in the Post Office was adamant that I didn't need an MoT.
Have you tried just going to your local Post Office and tryiong to renew your tax?

Does your V5 say on it "Declared new at first registration" ? On the front, special notice.martin
Ah yes, this old chestnut. I believe that the rule that's written down is that if you have an IVA pass, you don't need an MOT for three years. This was certainly true of SVA, so I would assume (dangerous, I know) that it's the same with IVA.
Of course, as you have discovered, it's very much open to interpretation by individual post offices and DVLA offices.
AND, with a car that has been built from used parts, it isn't particularly sensible because, as Steve pointed out, the IVA doesn't assess road worthiness.
I guess, personally, I'd probably want an MOT, probably from day one, just for my own peace of mind - we can all miss things, after all.
If I'd used all new parts, I might feel a little differently though!

as iva on 99 car i knew i need an mot in 1 year but not after 6months-knew dvla would not have a f*cking clue if tried to tax 1/2 way through year so usual kit car problems of doors not opening etc could become fail at mot-how many attempts at opening door before you class as a fail...the new modification for this is not ready yet from msc
i also have schroth 4 point harnesses but in date so should be fine
more annoying more than anything else as getting car mapped next week-delayed due to bad weather
good old kit car ownership

My advise is complete Form V112 (see link) which is an application for exemption from MOT and take your V5 to the Post Office. That's what I'll be doing if they request an MOT on my tax reminders.

I like that form.http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_...

It asks for when the vehicle was made...so you can say 'I made it xxxxxxx'.
The V5 will say 'Date first registered' Which may be many years back if it is an age related plate. I don't know what a Q plate V5 says in date of first registration. The V5 has no box for manufacture date.
Steve
Just to add to the "no mot required" brigade, I had my car IVAd & registered last year; the V5 says 'date of first registration xx 07 2010' & the guy who inspected it for registration said that, because it is newly registered (with an 'old' age-related registration) I don't need an mot done for 3 years. I took it to the inspection with an mot & he said I needn't have done that either. May be I'll have a discussion this coming July - but I hope not.
