Defender 90 Td5 Stereo has no Bass???

I have an 04 Defender 90 XS Td5 and I cannot find a suitable solution to upgrade the sound system to inject a bit, of bass into it.....
I have upgraded the head unit to a decent mid ranged Sony system, and have changed the speakers (which are only 10cm in diameter) in the front and at the back to some decent Alpine cones. It seems impossible to get anything bigger to fit in those spaces, i tried to fit some 13cm cones but they would not fit however i played around with them.
The only other option seems to be to fit a bass unit, but then i lose space in the back. I have seen those slim bass units, but they do not fit under the seat of a 90 as the battery is under the passenger seat and the diesel tank is under the driver seat. Are they any good anyway?.....
