Cutting down a solid wood door
Discussion
Chaps,
I have a solid wood door which I need to cut down to fit a smaller aperture. I need to take approx 2.5" off top and bottom, and around 1" off each side. The door is about six feet, standard size.
I only own a handsaw which I'm guessing isn't appropriate for this job.
Do I take it to a sawmill of some description? I've got it all marked out already, I'm just not sure how to cut it.
Thanks.

I can help you with cutting it down for you, BUT I would be somewhat concerned about cutting that much off due to the possibility of it affecting the tenon joints, but it is dependant on the construction of the door.
I am based in your area, so send me an email if you would like me to take a look at it and give some advice.

Subject to the door's construction, you can do it with a decent panel saw and tidy it up with a plane; not very difficult. Just lay the door on two trestles and kneel on it.
Agree, a good Jet, Stanly panel saw for between £5.95 -£7.95 will do the job without a sweat forming. Use the back of the saw and the handle as a stright edge and the latter a right angle, but as another poster mentioned watch you do not cut into the tenon joints.Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
