Hi!

I took my M5 down to BMW today to get them to check the oil-level....the level indicator in the instrument panel (not the i-drive) appears to have frozen showing 0.7L (this was the level prior to an oil change at the end of December and it hasn't changed in 2000 miles!)

They said all was well, but told me something that I can't believe.....that 0.7L does not mean that I have 0.7L to play with till a top-up is needed.....rather that I have only 0.3L to play with!!

This cannot be right....surely!

The handbook confirms my thinking.....that 0.7L means I have 700ml to use up till a top-up is needed.

Am I being thick or missing something here?

I firmly believe that the dealer has it wrong. If it was the case that you had used 0.7ltr then the guage would count up rather than down.

Now, where's that guy who moaned about us calling them 'monkeys'?

Get them to drain a bit off and see if it goes up or down

The digital dipstick really is a pile of garbage but what you are supposed to do is wait until it warns you (reads zero) then put in one litre. It can take a while to pick up the new reading but do not be tempted to put any more than one litre in.

Thanks for the comments.

Methinks the indicator is frozen and that an oil change would be required, at their expense, to rectify matters.....I will get a second opinion from BMW.

I always go by the i-drive of course, but never add a litre when it tells me to.....0.75 litres is just fine and lasts me about 3000 miles.

The OP is correct, the electronic dipstick is ste!

I know a Trafpol who upon going on duty got a low oil warning in a 535D touring, he took a photo of the warning message with his phone before adding a litre of oil.

Later that evening he recieved an invite to an incident on the M1, so he put his foot down to get there.

The increase in crankcase pressure at high revs blew the excess oil into the turbo which resulted in an engine runaway situation/crankcase full of shrapnel. BMW denied any responsibility until they were shown the photo and were reminded that the Trafpol in question was considered by the Home Office to be an expert witness.

just as a point mate

on the m5 the warning comes at 0.2 .. not zero.. so a litre would be too much and may set off the overfill warning..

Do BMWs not have physical dipsticks anymore?
