I've now had two bad tanks of fuel in my life that have caused the car to splutter and trigger oxygen sensor/knock sensor warnings on the ECU. First time was in my M3 a couple of years ago and then only October last year it happened again in my 996. Both times it was BP Ultimate in the tank (not the same petrol station). Both times the faults have been cleared by draining the tank (m3) or just filling up a full tank of good fuel (996) and the faults never re-occured.

Usually I use my local shell garage so this is not a problem but has anyone else experinced problems with BP Ultimate. I find I tend to avoid BP because of this... is it a wider problem?

My Impreza won't run properly on ultimate either. Tescos momentum 99 and Optimax work fine in it though.

Well that just hardens my resolve to stick to V-Power.

It caused no end of problems withy 190 cosworth - would continually cut out pulling up at lights/junctions - checked everything - put it down to crap fuel (was a tank full of BP) switched back to shell which was what I was normally using (filled up just the once at BP because running out of fuel) and have never had the same problem since

I put petrol in - the car goes.

I put high octane petrol in - the car goes faster.

What's not to like?! driving

Both my imprezas hated BP ultimate, except the 102, which is no longer available. I use Vpower or Tesco99 now.

3/4 of my fill-ups are BP Ultimate as that's the petrol station right outside work. Not had a single problem over ~4 years (he says crossing fingers).

Likewise. My M3 has been run on ultimate (mostly) for the last four years with no problems.

Put the pedal flat down, as soon as it comes on boost, splutter, judder, splutter, and a distinct lack of grunt. It's never happened with Vpower or Tesco99, or Esso energy either.

Certainly round my way V-power is a good 3 or 4 p cheaper a litre than BP ultimate anyway

Yep, they seemed quite concerned. I haven't used their ultimate lately, Shell have got the business, I don't know whether or not they have fixed the problem yet.

I'm always suspicious that garage owners dump normal unleaded in their vpower or ultimate tanks and just pocket the premium.

I do use vpower in my cars but I always fill up at a shell owned station, not one owned by an independant.

BP ultimate is complete ste...if your car is mapped for V-power or 99, ultimate is like running regular unleaded. BP should pull their finger out, shell have the "performance fuel" thing sewn up.

I can't comment for the petrol but the ultimate diesel makes a definite difference in my car. Engine runs smoother and better fuel consumption, no brainer for me.

About a year ago a BP garage local to me was found to have traces of frog sporn in the petrol. It was also found to be 50% water! It was all over the local news paper as peoples cars were breaking down left right and centre. Never filled up there since and never will again.

Back in the day it was dumping unleaded into the 4 star. Was rife here in NI, so i'd hazzard a guess some people would do it with Super.
