Sirblade, have a look at the VW service plans - I was going down the route you were (for my wifes MK5 GTI) and then found for £300 I could get 3 services at a dealer.

On the GTI I had to get my cambelt & water pump done at 4 years - might be worth checking as the recommendations have changed from those in the manual but could still be due on the passat (not sure what age your car was and assume it's not chain driven).
