Please help my friend to 'man up'
Discussion
Hi all,
A close friend of mine is looking at replacing his car. Now, each to their own and all that, but I feel it is my duty to advise him against buying a brand new/nearly new BMW 116d.
There are a few reasons for my angst: chief among them is the fact that he is 20 year old petrolhead and should (in my opinion) be spending less of his hard-earned on a motor and more on (Diet) Coke and (watching) Hookers (at international rugby matches) for example. I can help with the coke and hookers, but I would appreciate your suggestions for alternative transport for him.
Criteria:
- cheaper than a nearly new 116d (shall we say <£15k)
- insurable yet fun for a 20 year old (althought the cheaper the purchase price; the more dough he'll have for insurance)
- not going to be a repairs money-pit (as I'm sure there will be a £5k E36 M3 suggestion!)
- pretty fast, but clearly I don't want my mate's car to totally embarrass my beloved 182!
I have already given him a few suggestions, including Focus STs and various incarnations of 3 series coupes.
So what would the PH community suggest to tempt him away from the diesel devil?
Thanks in advance
Simoid
ETA: he needs more than 2 seats.

he's a petrolhead and wants to splurge 15k on a mundanemobile? aged 20?
i'd venture that he's a poser looking to knock about in something that makes him look good and not a petrolhead.

Sorry mate I don't want to show up a 182 owner (i've got a 172) but for that budget there are so many options that don't require high insurance premiums not like the clio
I shall suggest something a little left field and that is this : http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2433159.htm hope he enjoys!

tell him that higher insurance costs will be eased by lower depreciation so get something memorable!
How can you have mentioned the mps and cupra r in the same sentence as the Carlton? Which is the ultimate (in my mind at least) of saloon car excellencymazda mps.

According to a survey in my head (which may actually be true) ppl who buy diesels and are young know nothing about cars and CO2 emissions.
And also you can't pull any bird by saying you have a diesel. That is a fact.

Man up? None of the above are exactly cars for real men. They all have air con, traction control/electronic this/that/the other or just not enough power to get you into trouble unless you know what you're doing.
Caterham 7? TVR of some sort? Lotus Elise? These cars require proper man skills to keep you out of a coffin in the wet.

Thanks folks, I can't believe I've woken up to so many great shouts and a few I'd not considered (because they are off my radar due to being older than me
)
Obviously you're all helping my mate to get a better car, but you may also feel warm inside knowing that it's letting my community see another interesting set of wheels, and helping the environment by not factory ordering a brand new one!
I may have to return a few of you to the more sensible end of suggestions though, as I don't think he'll manage 15-20k miles, rain/shine/snow, in a Caterham. He'll also need back seats
I do appreciate the probing of the leftfield boundaries nonetheless - one of them could catch his eye!
edit - just miles, with loads of A/B, not remotely all motorway miles
