Helmsley. At the middle of several excellent roads, and not far from lots of fooderies.

Nothing wrong with Helmsley but Helmsley is not in the Dales -North Yorkshire Moors
There's good and bad everywhere some worth travelling for, but what sort of budget?

Just seen your last posting re Red Lion Burnsall I agree with you.
Suggestion for your next trip.
Come across to Hawes turn left to Settle. Great road and you don't need to know it like a local as you have good sight lines. Turn left at Ribble head down to Settle. Good food. Turn right along the A65 rage to Ingleton then back up to Hawes. You can run up Kingsdale (runs alongside) but some knowledge is needed to enjoy it. Open bends down into streams etc. All this gets you back up to Hawes. Settle is about 1 hour from Leyburn
Care has to be taken on Sundays or early evening in summer WATCH out for bikes.

My strict answer (as it is in the Dales national park) would be Reeth. Just outside the park proper I'd probably go with Leyburn. However well north of the park but still, in my opinion, in the Dales is Alston. That's where I'd go. All the roads in/out of Alston are magnificent driving roads and there are so many cracking pubs +/- 10 miles you'll be spoilt for choice.

Bet its a nice location in the summer, does the food improve seasonally?

Don't know a day out by the river with my children isn't as enjoyable in the winter.
