I know it's early days for the Coalition, but if they turn out to be a worse lot than the last lot, will there ever come a time when we - as a country - gird our loins and say "enough is enough" and do everything we can to overthrow those in power?

Or are we simply too lily-livered to do anything so revolutionary?

Or could we just not be bothered?

And, as in Egypt, would our military be prepared to step in and take over?

Or would they not be bothered?

Or would the police have shot us as terrorists long before that?

There's a bit of a difference: there, when you voted in an election, it didn't matter who you voted for, the NDP always stayed in power with 90+% of the vote; here governments change from time to time as the electorate gets fed up of them (although Brown did his level best to stay on last year).

There is no desire or need for "an Egypt" here.

Remember the Poll Tax riots?

What if the government didn't do a U turn (of sorts) what would have happened?

So how long would it take for the national collective conscience here to realise that whichever box they tick come election day, the same (or similar) bunch get into Government with the same (or similar) policies?

What day is this happening on? Because, if it clashes with Eastenders...

given all the upset at the cuts being planned by the goverenment, I fail to see how your premise stacks up.

The government in the UK would use the media to make any 'revolutionary' look like an anarchist yobbo. They are making an example of Charlie Gilmour at the moment. It looks like he'll end up in prison along with the other idiot who dropped a fire extinguisher off the roof at Millbank.

Meanwhile there are people out the committing ABH and being left to roam around free.....

the revolution will come eventually. the coalition won't last another 3 years.

Because if Labour had stayed in power, or the Conservatives had won, or the Lib Dems, or the bloody Monster Raving Loony Party, they would all still be facing the deficit and would all have to make the unpopular cuts.

No party was ever going to get into power and say "It's OK, we've just found £800 trillion down the back of the sofa. Everything's going to be all right."

Labour would have continued pissing away money on their client voters until teh IMF turned off the tap.

In your dream scenario do we just ignore the debts?

No.

It's just not 'British'.

On a smaller level, it's like when you go on holiday and the locals blatantly flaunt the smoking ban in restaurants and bars. It's just not the sort of thing we, as a nation, would do.

In my view.

Sums it up perfectly smile Seriously, I have to be up for work at 6.30 every morning, don't get back until gone 5 and then there's the evening taxi service (Scouts, karate, trampolining). I just haven't got two weeks to stand in the middle of a square (I've used up my annual leave on a fortnight in Gran Canaria....)

And it always rains.

Google 'Oliver Cromwell' let us know if you learn anything

I think where we are currently is that the disengagement from Politics is huge, there is an apathy out there which comes in large part from the spoon feeding of the people. Self reliance is a thing of the past therefore people are reluctant to take actions which might result in them having to take more responsibility personally.

Well, it'll happen over a few days, so Eastenders will need to be missed. You can, however, catch in on iPlayer.

Nail and head.

Previous Tory Govts have allowed us to think for ourselves and take responsibility for our actions - small government, if you like. This lot just want to continue the way of the last and spoon feed us.

I doubt it. Things aren't bad enough in the UK and no where near close. People don't have the motivation, need or desire for change and there is nothing to change it to. i.e. change 'democracy' for what exactly? A one party state? A mass gathering in support of whom?

It's a very diverse culture here, so unlike egypt and the others we are not functioning as a group with the same causes.

Until then all will continuously stay the same.
