So my chum is preggars and her man is on employment and support allowance. He's worked all his life but is ill and unable to at the mo - hopefully it will just be short term.

theres a thing called a maternity grant which is £500 free cash. turns out if you are on income based esa - ie have never worked or paid tax you get it, if you have worked and paid tax all your life you dont get it.

brilliant. not sure why anyone should get any but at least if they do let the people who have contributed get some back ffs.

nothing changes

Are you under some apprehension that this is somehow 'news'?
And how does your mate (who needs it by all accounts) getting £500 to help give his child a half decent start exemplify the entire country being "fooked"?

Its like reading the daily mail but with even evidence to back up the nonsense headline.

I think the point is that if you haven't worked and don't intend to, a £500 kiddie bonus is available to you, therefore making kids a career option for these people. Have a kid, get a monkey... and repeat.

the OP is correct also, my dad works at the benefits office as a clerk/interviewer/assesor type person and people coming in and saying "I've had a another kids where's my £500?" is a way of life for him to the point he doesn't talk about work ever anymore as it's too depressing.

He did get taken off face-to-face stuff once because a benefits scrounger walked in and accused my dad of being stupid for having a job. My dad blew his top and had to work back office for a couple of years rofl

its fooked as we do not reward those who make an effort - why should the guy who has paid tax all his life not get the cash when lazy arse man gets it??

giving out free cash for no reason when we are so much in debt shows how this country if fooked if we carry on with these stupid systems.

Sorry, misread your OP. I didn't realise you friend couldn't get it.
Either way I disagree with "for no reason". Of course there is a reason. It is to make sure the mother/baby can afford to give the baby a decent start and that the mother can adequately clothe and feed the baby and give herself a decent diet in the first few weeks so she can produce decent milk etc etc etc.
THat this money might often be used for this is a different matter entirely.

Back to my question: Why is giving a new mother £500 to help with the wellbeing of her and her baby a "stunning example of the UK being fooked"?
THe total spent on this is tiny in the grand scheme of our economy and it ensures at least a decent start for all babies born in a poor household. As fked as our benefits system admittedly is, I can't get my head around how you think our country is fooked because of this tiny. tiny good thing

You're missing the point, maybe you need to re-read the OP, or maybe you're just trying to be obtuse, not sure yet.

Anyways, the point the OP is making is that a life long benefits scrounger gets the £500. His mate, who has worked most of his life but is temporarily down on his luck due to circumstances, doesn't.

Does that seem Ok to you? So his mate is not able to give his baby the same start in life (as described by you above) as the career scrounger?

I think this clarifies the OP and I think he has a point.

No,. you are missing MY point.
Im sick and tired of thread after thread of people whining about how st our country is.
If this thread was titled "Benfits- fooking unfair" or similar, I would have simply agreed that this example was seemingly unfair, despite there being too little detail to form a decent judgement.
WHat I object to is this habit people have of finding something that seems a bit crap on the face of it and screeching about how our country is completely fked becasue one tiny trivial think they disagree with.

Why should taxpayers money be paid out to anyone in any form, because they decide to have a child? Why is it a good thing? And do you really believe that the £500 or whatever it is will make any difference to that child?

The single biggest problem facing the world today is overpopulation yet here we go encouraging people who seemingly don't have the resources to raise a child from their own endeavours, to bring kids into a world that they similarly won't be able to survive in, in any meaningful way.

OP, your mate should have made sure he was financially secure before taking on the responsibilities of a child.

In fact he should have been sterilised at birth along with a few million others, and not been allowed a reversal until he could prove his ability to look after his spawn.

That's a completely different argument. I have no strong opinion on whether £500 should be paid to a new mother. I disagree with most benefits and that particular one is minor in the grands scheme of things. Certainly not a country ruiner.
Just to put it a different way. Our country is neither better nor worse for the payment of £500. It is an irrelevance.
For those of you who are so convinced that this ruins our country, then leave and go to Peru or Saudi Arabia instead of crying about it all the time.

Oh and incidentally, if we maintain our average of 1.9 children per couple then we are fooked as the next generation of working population will not be able to support our ageing current generation

Because the state is actively encouraging the unemployed to breed. Unfortunately, children who grow up in benefit dependent households are more likely to become benefit dependants than children who are born into working families.

In the longer term, it would be better to offer financial incentives to working families. They are more likely to produce working offspring.

I was married for 8 years before we felt that we had the finances, and a suitable home, in place to support children.

Don4l- me too.

Can you lot honestly not distinguish between the following two phrases:

1) I don't agree with x -it seems wrong to me
2) Because I don't agree with x it means that the United Kingdom is completely fooked.
