An affordable (cheap) one; a hand push version.

Any suggestions please?

Neither use nor ornament, I'm afraid - tines too short, no weight to it. All you'll get is a series of little pricks...

Try Green Thumbs or hire a proper one from somebody like HSS: http://www.hss.com/index.php?g=62326&t=zoom

Indeed. An aerator that doesn't have hollow tines can actually make things worse as it compacts the soil whilst making the hole. What you need is something that lifts out a core.

So either this and a bit of effort:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/b-Hollow-Tine-Aerator/dp/B...

Or ring Green Thumb. I pay them just over £100 a year for 4 weed and feed treatments, moss killer and annual aeration and scarification (latter two only if needed and you want it). They'll probably give you a quote just to aerate if that's all you want.

Sounds like a good option for £100. I will ask around to see if I can get a similar deal. Cheers.

I have a lawn aerator, but it's so hard to use you might as well flog a dead horse. Neigh.
