Help with XK gearbox fault
Discussion
Can anyone tell me if there's any common faults with the XK Gearbox?
Mother just phoned up to say the warning light has come on on her circa 2002 XK8 and it now won't really go anywhere, wants to know if she should recover it to Jaguar main dealer or a local garage we've used in the past. Think I've persuaded her to have it recovered home so that we can look in to the best way to sort the problem.
Also can anyone recommend a good independent specialist in the south east? It would be nice to avoid what I assume are ridiculous main dealer labour rates.
I'd be rather annoyed if it was anything major as it a very well looked after 25k mile car with FJSH.

There's a reasonable chance at such a low mileage that all might be needed is an oil change. It's not as easy to do on the ZF box as most transmissions but at 10 years old the oil will be well past it's best.
Might be too far away from you but I can recommend Paul Roach Jaguar for diagnosis. Paul is in Sudbury, Suffolk.

Thanks very much for the replies and thanks Norman for the voice mail.
Turns out it's thrown up a gearbox fault, low brake fluid fault and put the car into limp mode. I briefly spoke to Caffyns Jaguar who have done all of the servicing for the last few years, They suggested trying a new battery as it was a slightly unusual series of faults could be due to the battery being on it's way out. Sounded hopeful as it turns out the car is a 2001 with 20k miles on it and as you can imagine does sort runs which aren't good for the battery.
Just got back from trying that without any luck, I started the car and the gear stick was very reluctant to move out of park.
I'll pass on the recommendations but I can see them sending it town to the main dealers despite my reservations. My brother in laws going to bring home a fault code reader and see what come up on that.
Can't really complain as it's been faultless for the last 4 or so years, fingers crossed it's nothing too major.

Thought I'd update this incase anyone is ever searching for similar issues
Brother in laws been to see the car and gone through it in a far more orderly manor and with far more knowledge than me and found a burnt out relay, swapped it over with another and it seams to be running OK now.
Fingers crossed it all sorted and things are looking far more promising than a few hours ago.

Even if it seems fixed it might be worth considering diagnostic checks to discover exactly why the relay burnt out.. that might just be a symptom rather than the underlying cause.
I'd suggest you have the gearbox oil and filter changed once you are sure you have got to the bottom of the gearbox fault. Several ZF boxes have failed prematurely due to lubrication failure and they ain't cheap to replace.
