SL55 Roof ?

A quick roof question, According to my handbook if I point my key at the driver's door and
hold down the open button then my roof should open and aircon seat come on etc but that does
not seem to be the case with mine ! Tried both keys but nothing happens, Is there some setting
in the Command system to enable this or is it just goosed ?

yep should open all the windows and then do the roof you got the boot seperator closed?

Yep it works fine off the button in the car just not off the key. Been looking at those plug in interfaces you
can get that allows you to open the roof with the key using the RF signal so you have a greater range plus
window control and the option to lower the roof while on the move (slowly)

There are two signals generated by the keys, one is radio, used for central locking operations and the other is infra red, used for comfort locking and opening. The infra red sensor is on the door handle, looks like a little black square, this is part of the handle and has a small electrical plug on the back, may have a bad or loose connection there. We have seen a few where the connector was not plugged in as it can be easily forgot if the wire was tucked in behind the door! This is the signal used for comfort closing. The infra red on the keys must work as you can start the car. This should be checked via star tester for confirmation. Hope this helps.

Try the passenger side as that does it as well and chances are your passenger side will work ok.

On my newly aquired SL55 this feature was a bit iffy BUT new batteries in the remotes and it works a treat - you have to have the key very close to the little window though.

Mine only works when the key is actually touching, or very close at least, to the door handle. Pretty rubbish, but the RF extender looks a good buy to operate it with three distant unlock-presses...

can't remember exactly but this function is only applicable to a certain model year onwards. There are no settings on command or via the instrument cluster to turn this fuction on. If its programmable then it needs to be taken to your main dealer or local Merc Specialist who have Star diagnosis & can the recode the Rear Sam Control module if memory serves mee right in order to enable this fuction.
Once enabled you have to stand within 1m of either front doors & press & hold the unlock buttion directly at the small black square on the door handle. The doors should unlock & the the roof will open provided you do not release your finger. The same operation is needed if you want to close the doors & roof using the remote key - you must press & hold the lock button.

Well I bought the Smart-top unit and fitted it which was pretty easy. Unit is fully programmable via the car display
and gives you the option to program the speed at which you can lower the roof up to 35 mph. Range for dropping
the roof via remote is around 100 metres or so and you can leave the windows up or lower them at same time.
once in the car you no longer need a foot on the brake you just pull up the roof switch and release and the roof
will lower as you pull away. With roof up or down a double tap on the roof switch lowers all the windows and a double
pull on the switch raises them again. All in all quite a handy little unit for £250 can't believe Mercedes don't sell a similar
unit for say £1500

Probably because they don't want the warranty claims from people wrecking their rooves by opening and closing them at 35mph! I think I'll stick with the "inconvenience" of having to stop to raise/lower mine and avoid a bill for £££££££££££

As to the range of the comfort option - I changed my key fob batteries and it works a good 30-40 feet away now. Not that it's much use as I very rarely use the key, just carrying the keyless entry card in my wallet.

As I said UP TO 35mph it's not compulsory and you can set any speed you like via the cars interface if your worried about
the quality of the roof mechanism not being up to the job. Wouldn't recommend it at 35 myself but rolling along in
traffic should not be too much for it. Most newer cars have this facility built in now anyway.
